Polarizing figure, but you can't deny that making the Yankees champions was his passion. You can't say that about all owners.

RIP

Polarizing is the key word. He may have had the passion, but let's admit it, his hands-on, ignorance management at times probably cost the Yankees as many World Series titles as he enabled them to win.

Especially in the 1980s. The guy basically cost Don Mattingly a ring.

Quick reaction: Is the Boss worthy of induction into the Hall of Fame?

He'll have a Monument in the park, but I'm not certain of the history of owners getting into the HOF. But I'd vote for him!

I wasn't sure, so here's all you need to know about it (incl. a list):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monument_Park_(Yankee_Stadium)

There are 5 Monuments (Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, and Joe DiMaggio, and manager Miller Huggins -- I thought there were more!) and also 21 Plaques (incl. 1 Owner, and one for Billy Martin as Second baseman/Manager).

So George should get a monument. And I hope Torre gets a plaque at least.

Me, too!

We arrived at the Stadium about 1.5 hrs before the game, and the line for Monument Park was already closed because it was too long. rolleyes

Just saw this quote from Raiders owner Al Davis. Makes me shake my head, but laugh at the same time.

"He was a friend and a warrior. We not only shared a birthday, but also an unyielding will to win and an unparalleled commitment to excellence. I judge sports figures based on individual achievement, team achievement and contributions to the game. George was right up there with me at No. 1 — bright, aggressive and, most of all, not afraid."

How Davis could talk about himself while "honoring" the death of Steinbrenner just boggles my mind. Funny thing is though, if it were Al Davis who died instead, Steinbrenner may have said the exact same thing.

I know I should be insulted by you feeling sorry for me or making fun of me for loving the Raiders. But... I'm a Raiders fan. There's not much you can say to hurt me lol

This may be an old joke, but I just heard it on the radio. Steinbrenner is in heaven now and the first thing he did was fire God and tell Jesus to get a haircut and shave.

Later he rehires God.

Then fires him again.
