Re: 2008 Baseball Challenge: Weekly Edition - 03/31/08 02:45 AM

Got off to a bad start here. I put down the Yankee PS to get a feel for the points I wanted to spend and I forgot to change them (I didn't want them for the week).

This is a stoopida fockin' game. I may not play next year.

Weekly vs. Daily is going to be interesting. I have no experience in it - care to share some tips from basketball, JG?? ;\) \:p

Tips? There's only one that I know of, and it's pretty obvious... ;\)

Obvious? What's obvious?

You know... the one semi-great thing about weekly... I don't think we have to worry about double-headers.

Hmmmm... Maybe we do...

Not that I expect any of you to share some "tips" but I'm trying to figure out if when picking a pitching staff is it more important to go by the number of games to be played that week OR go strictly by the staff and their opponents?

It's a combination of all of the above. I would go with the best staff against weak opponents, factoring in how many games they're playing that week.

I agree. The pitching decisions have to strike a compromise between the # of games, and the strength of the opponents. I weigh the # of games more heavily for the hitters than I do for the pitching staffs. But it's a work in progress, and there'll be a lot of trial and error.

HOLY SHIT!! 1 POINT FOR THE DAY!!?! ONE??!?

Damn Yankees!!! Fucking pitching staff (which I didn't want to begin with) loses me 20 points.... then Posada and Cabrera go on the DL and that fucking ugly Godzilla (who the hell would marry him?) gives me a total of only 9 points this week as DH.

I've been having problems with it for a few days. Try logging into your Golf screen and THEN go into your baseball screen. That'll work (for some reason).

Last week I had Brian Schneider, who gets an infection and misses most of the week. So, I pick Posada, who promptly goes on the DL for the first time in his career. I'm staying away from NY catchers.

Chipper Jones and Escobar are now hurt, so it looks like I'm going to sink this week.

I'm only worried about Cockcroft ("The Golden Sombreros", one of ESPN's "experts")... he had the ChiSox and they had a -9 tonight smile ) ...maybe I'll be okay, at least within catch-up range.

I think the taste of closing in on #1 is causing me to over-think things now! lol But damn, 8 more weeks of this???!!! eek There's no way..... lol

Re: 2008 Baseball Challenge: Weekly Edition - 05/12/08 02:42 PM

I basically copied his lineup last week! he updated the frontpage of the Baseball Challenge late night sunday and I was able to squeeze that great White Sox PS pick (in spite of the minus pts on sunday and an awful -22 wednesday) but Renteria ( 0-18 slump) scored 1/6 of Furcal pts in 6 times as many games! yesterday I had dinner with my mom and never fixed my l/u...

anyway, nobady cares about me. I am also cheking JG's team page before I check mine! lol lol

Cockcroft's BBC Preview came out last Sunday. I didn't even know he put his lineup out there until after I set mine. I was nervous about CLE but settled on them, then I saw his preview and saw he took them, too, so figured I wouldn't lose (or gain) too much on him....

GINA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Where you been girl?

Congrats on your Astros. They're doing great.

I've been watching Luke Scott for you, as promised. He's doing rather well.

Re: 2008 Baseball Challenge: Weekly Edition - 05/17/08 10:37 PM

yes, gina, sign up!!! I would agree that we do the math based on your average pts and add up to the weeks you missed!

and yes, it's overall we're talking about. the Don must be on steroids lol

and in my opinion this weekly game is nowhere near as fun as the daily mode. I'm playing the daily where I'm not only doing better but having a lot more fun. JG's rise to the top of the leaderboard is keeping everyone interested and our league has good competition but I still like daily.

Re: 2008 Baseball Challenge: Weekly Edition - 05/17/08 11:58 PM

Hey guys!! I missed talking to all of you!

Bethie, thanks so much for watching Luke. My friend is furious with the Astros for not only trading her man but also giving him the traditional post-Astros blessing to do better than he did with us. haha

I just recently finished up finals, so now I'm out for the summer and done with my first year of college. Things are a lot less busy now, so I hope to have more time for baseball and for the BB!

I've hardly even kept up with the Astros, so I've unfortunately been completely out of the loop with general baseball happenings. I really appreciate the invites, but I think I'll just keep a close eye on you guys to make sure you behave. wink

TM, so are you doing weekly here and daily in another group? Daily was always so hard for people to keep up with and stay dedicated to, but I think I'd like the style better. Hey, either way, it's a chance to whine and trash talk about baseball, which is always good.

Hi Gina!!

I've been so busy this year that daily would've been literally impossible. But seeing how I'm doing in Weekly, I think it's terrific! lol wink

You should sign up - it doesn't take nearly as much time. cool

Our don is still hanging tough (and in 2nd place). I think he actually picked up some points on the first placed hatted one. One more night of this and then we see what happens.

Hang tough, Geoff.

I haven't checked this league all week, but I just did to make sure I'm still in last and I realized Doumit was hurt. Every catcher I pick gets hurt. So I'm just letting everyone know Joe Mauer is my pick for next week. He'll be hurt my tuesday at the lastest.

I'm struggling making picks again this week (too much pressure lol)... Cockcroft took the Rays PS (not a typo!) and I'm like... ehhhh... do I copy him to try and stay in the race, or do I try to find a sleeper?

It's so much easier being last wink
Posted By: SC

Re: 2008 Baseball Challenge: Weekly Edition - 05/18/08 06:55 PM

Cockcroft is busy being a weatherman. You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.

I'm surprised he's going with a team pitching only six games.

Re: 2008 Baseball Challenge: Weekly Edition - 05/18/08 07:01 PM

I was thinking about BoSox again, but that makes me nervous. When did they get that stinky Colón? Rays make me nervous, too - are they for real or a fluke?

If I copy him w/ the Rays and concentrate on batters maybe I can stay in the race...

argh!

You're playing a different game from the rest of us. You're playing a game of "staying-close-to-number-one".

Just out of curiosity, how do you know Cockcroft picked the Rays??

I've wondered if it's worth it to go with a players who's on a hot streak even if he's playing 6 days, or if it's always better to pick someone else with more days.

Someone like Lance Berkman who has been playing ridiculously well might score more points in less days that someone else.

yes gina I'm playing the daily game with another entry in some leagues like "Sandlot Legends" from the BBC message board geeks. you don't even really have to join a league to play this game, though.

I was going with the Red Sox PS but I just loved his Rays PS pick. cheap and good. he's the guy who writes the articles at BBC's frontapge, SC. that's how we know his whole team in advance.

look out below, I'll be rolling next week!

Geoff has closed within 18 points of #1

TM has quietly moved into the top 1%

KL - Nice pick with the Sox (and Lester)

You gotta like the fact that Beckett and Lester are going for the Sox BUT the Sox have been playing like doody on the road (and that's where their next two games are).

In your favor is Tampa is playing their two games (this weekend) at home (where they're doing well).

In any event, both Tampa and Boston did much better this week than my pick, Minnesota. (44 points)

Re: 2008 Baseball Challenge: Weekly Edition - 05/24/08 09:24 PM

unless the last two days of the week prove me very wrong, I believe the Rays PS pick was the best anyway. way cheaper and that team is playing very well. you gotta love'em. with Jackson today and the great James Shields tomorrow you can count on them and you can't complain if the Red Sox PS score a few pts more.

now, as I grow more interested in this game, I wonder who the hell I'll pick next week. I'll probably (I'll definitely) take a look at the Sombrero guy first lol

compared to the daily game, which one do you think is more about skill or luck?

in my humble opinion, with only the first weeks of play, I believe the weekly game is a bit more about skill, don't you think?

You pay more for a bad decision in this weekly game and the luck factor is less (than the daily game), so I agree. Skill is more of a factor in this weekly game.

I'm happy I didn't drink the Diamondback Kool-Aid this week. there are still 4 games left and Washington isn't a great offensive team, so they may pick up some points still.

I was split between AZ and ATL Sunday, and my gut feeling was to go with the Braves as they have been playing very well. They lost two of three this week, but still got me 52 points. I'm glad I didn't read the Cockroft suggestion as it might have changed my mind.
Posted By: Tony Mosrite

Re: 2008 Baseball Challenge: Weekly Edition - 05/29/08 02:12 PM

with all due respect, the D-Backs were the best pick. they can get shelled for 45 more runs in the next games, but that's just baseball. I'm happy when I can find a decent PS with a reasonable match up and an ace going, and the Diamondbacks had the perfect matchup, two aces going twice each one and they're one of the best teams in baseball anyway.

Actually, it was all a hunch. As I said, if I read the Cockroft article, I would probably have been persuades to go with AZ. I had AZ for several weeksearly on and they are terrific, but seemed to me to start getting a little more ordinary. The Braves had been playing well and I actually thought they would win 5 or 6 games against Mil and Cin. They haven't won many games, but the pitching was there. Yes, I admit, it was mostly luck.

Re: 2008 Baseball Challenge: Weekly Edition - 06/02/08 02:26 PM

well it was either the Mets or the Cubbies. I believe I managed a killer lineup with the cheaper Mets.

the Red Sox are always a good pick because they have the best rotation in the MLB but you can't get a better matchup than this week's Mets. plus I love picking a NL team over an AL one.

what I'm really looking forward this week is seeing if it pays off not paying the big bucks at 2B for Chase Utley. I thought it made sense giving up on him this week because I already missed the best week of his life, probably (averaged almost 10 fan pts per game last week) - if he keeps playing like that he's worth every penny.

Week 9
Code:
JG 242 2748 #6 Overall ...100 pts from #1 now :(
TM 249 2567 #430 Overall
KL 330 2486
DB ^ 331 2456

SC 258 2410
JL 236 2239
BL 261 2235

5 weeks to go!

Seems a handful at the top of the leaderboard went with the scary Mutts PS (with #2 Cocky), including myself ( panic ), but a few took the Cubs and a the ChiSox...

Utley, like Ryan Howard, seems to hit his homeruns in clusters. He's had a few big power weeks this season.

I went with the Red Sox staff this week even though Matsuzaka is on the DL. I think the biggest factor I considered was 6 of 7 games at home. I'm starting to buy into this home field winning percentage thing in baseball this year, and the Red Sox seem to do exceptionally well at Fenway. Moreover, TB is a different team on the road.

I looked hard at the Mets, who are on the west coast this week where east coast teams often struggle. They are still a bit of an enigma. It should be an interesting week.

Re: 2008 Baseball Challenge: Weekly Edition - 06/03/08 04:21 AM

Well, the Sox blew it (Okajima pitched TERRIBLY in relief). They go back to the friendly confines of Fenway tomorrow, though. shhh

(The downside is Big Papi is now on the 15 day DL).

I lucked out with Milton Bradley this week. But I'm well aware that there is only a fine line between Mr. Big and Mr. Big Idiot. :)I have a strong hunch about a stff next week that I haven't previously selected, which means I may probably flop next week.

this was the 3rd straight week that I took the same PS that Cockcroft would indicate a couple of days later and to be honest, it didn't take a whole lot of brains to do that. he's just picking the obvious PS and they were painful the last 2 weeks, but if you keep picking good Pitching Staffs with good matchups against weak offensive teams in pitcher friendly ballparks, you must be on to stop the bleeding.

2 weeks ago I could see picking the D'backs, but I was surprised that he suggested the Mets staff for last week. All 7 games were not only on the road, but on the west coast, which is historically difficult for east coast teams. The Giants and Padres have both been improving while the Mets have been playing without a lot of fire since June of last year.

I picked the White Sox this week as they seeem to be playing very well although the three games in Detroit has me concerned. They also get to play the Rockies, which are a much different offensive team on the road.

Re: 2008 Baseball Challenge: Weekly Edition - 06/09/08 02:48 PM

I don't know if you could say he suggested the Mets PS. he mentioned that the 2 best picks were the Mets - and the Cubs, which was safer - but he picked the Mets, which was way cheaper and had the possibility to be awesome. I don't think Cockcroft or I or those who were bleeding the last 2 weeks deserve the blame, but you klydon deserve the praise for your last 2 weeks. this game is about making good picks and probably the reason you climbed so much in the last week is because you had the foresight to see the Mets would stumble in the West, something that I would never consider.

Now go home and get your fuckin' shinebox!

The Soriano injury derailed me a bit. I had him locked at 4.9 and then his value soared.

Last week when I picked my team for this week, the Brewers' staff looked good to me, but I can't remember why. Maybe it was because they are playing home all week, and they've been winning some games.

Thank you, SC. Let's see if it can last. I can only go down from here. I think I prefer being the chaser than the casee.

The Brewers staff got me 31 last night. Milwaukee seems to have turned things around a bit, and they are home all week. I'm hoping they could win 4 of 6 this week against the Orioles and Jays.

What're you whining about? I wouldn't call 21 pts in a loss "cursed". It was the first day of the week. There were only 5 MLB games played yesterday, and the difference between AZ and BOS PS's was only 7 pts. With the added bonus (for some of us) that BOS lost. wink

Its kinda weird when they actually answer your questions. One time I actually got through to Colin Cowherd's show on ESPN radio. Knowing that they screen you before you get on, makes you feel like you either have a legitimate point or, depending on the host, they want to argue with you. I have yet to have a question answered in a live chat. Probably because I ask questions about the Reds or Bengals, teams that are not very sexy for national sports coverage.

Geoff I would watch out is sounds like Cocky has a man crush on you. He's watching you, watching you, watching you.

I need to learn that order... I'm stupid and pick my batters first then don't have enough to pick good pitching so I have to go back and find a cheap batter or two. It's always so disappointing because I thought for sure I had the greatest bunch of hitters lined up for the week.

Re: 2008 Baseball Challenge: Weekly Edition - 06/30/08 03:36 PM

I had to make a few changes. I lost a chunk of salary room when Soriano went down. Escobar and Chipper were hurt last week and that hurt me, but I understand that they should both be back tomorrow, so I kept them. I have them locked well below market value and can't afford to lose them.

I had negative points on Sunday. mad I sunk.

I went with the White Sox staff this week. They have 7 home games against Cleveland and (I think) Baltimore.

Cocky went with the Angels, who I had last week (for 127 pts), but I reluctantly switched to Oakland (who're playing 7 games, altho on the road -- and VERSUS THE ANGELS!) panic

There are only 2 weeks left in the segment before everything resets, so I figured I gotta make a move if there's any chance of getting back up there. ohwell

Re: 2008 Baseball Challenge: Weekly Edition - 07/09/08 07:56 AM

What with all the darn rain hovering over my boys (and apparently jinxing them at the same time, as I choose to see it), it got me wondering how things have changed in this game regarding rainouts and doubleheaders when it's the weekly edition. I suppose there's no real way to catch the benefit of a DH unless the night it's rained out is the night you're setting it for the week, right? But even then, I realized it might not be worth it to take a team's pitching or certain players just for a DH, if they're not good enough to make it worth it for the week, huh?

So I guess what I'm getting at is, dare I say it, does this not have much of any effect on the game now?? Or am I missing something? I was looking back at a few of Plaw's posts - in politics, not even sports - and I ended up trying to analyze like him. I never do well when I over-think. lol

Daily's easier for me. We generally know which strategies work and which ones don't. Weekly, I'm still walking around blind in a dark room.

Re: 2008 Baseball Challenge: Weekly Edition - 07/10/08 09:13 PM

I saw some comparison earlier in the thread about weekly v. daily, and which is more skill-based and which more luck-based. Do you think it's one way or the other, or just a difference in the kind of strategy?

I could see having more "fluke" days in daily, but that could go either way - very lucky or very unlucky. Weekly, I think requires great strategy to plan and decide your picks, and also will make you pay more for your mistakes. I also was thinking that a fluke, either good or bad, would be further emphasized, but then I considered that when your picks last for a week rather than just a day, any fluke is likely to have less of an impact because it is 'evened out' by the rest of the week's results for that same team or player.

I'm starting to confuse myself. What it all comes down to is, JG's in first, so I think we should just conclude that weekly's based on luck. wink

I'm not sure. I like the weekly format because you only have to set the lineup once a week. I think of this as the Ron Popeil option (Set it, and forget it). It forces you to look more deeply at the pitching.

lol You must be right.

There's definitely different dynamics between this (weekly) and the daily game. I like this one better mostly because, as klydon said, you just set your lineup ONCE per week (I didn't like having to do that daily).

Re: 2008 Baseball Challenge: Weekly Edition - 07/27/08 05:01 AM

I went to an Astros game with my two friends this past Monday, and I just had to share with you guys what we put on our posters:

"Comeback starts...NOW!!"

It started out as an optimistic view of the season, since even the basement Astros look for a comeback shortly after the All-Star Break. But when our guys blew a 3-2 lead to give up 7 runs in the ninth (ugh), it became quite fitting for the game, as well. There we were in the bottom of the ninth, waving our posters and cheering while the stadium was more than half empty and people continued to file out. No, that's not diehard, that's foolish. lol

But anyway, that was my tribute to my BBC friends - what has become a popular motto around here. wink

No, we did NOT end up on TV!! We were sitting high up, but I know the cameras could've found us. What my friend and I have decided is that we need to wear blonde wigs and talk on our cell phones, because I swear, those are the only people they show on the TV broadcasts. (Me, bitter? whistle )

You should!! To be safe, you could put on the back what my friend jokingly added to the back of ours at the end: a question mark. Comeback starts...? haha

And we had the phrase on two posters, one saying "Comeback starts..." and one saying "NOW!!", so we figured the "NOW!!" could go for anything. Strike him out...NOW!! Hit a double...NOW!! Stop losing...NOW!!

Re: 2008 Baseball Challenge: Weekly Edition - 07/27/08 02:50 PM

Once a year I go to a Phillies game with my brother-in-law, who is a doctor and gets tickets from a pharmaceutical co. for seats directly behind home plate. One year I called my daughter at home to put the game on as we are on tv for the entire game. I told her I was on tv and she said, "Well, I'm watching something else right now. Can you call back later?"

Anyway, I enjoyed those seats at old Vets' Stadium where only a one inch panel of plexiglass separated me from Terry Francona and then Larry Bowa. I was practically in the dugout.

Re: 2008 Baseball Challenge: Weekly Edition - 07/27/08 05:15 PM

Oh no Klyd, you're not one of those guys who sits on his cell phone the whole game and waves at the camera behind home plate are you? wink

I could never afford those tickets, but in the old days at Candlestick we would just move down to those seats because they were empty or people would leave because it was too cold. It really was amazing seeing how fast that ball was pitched up close. It always made me think twice when I wanted to get mad at a batter who would strikeout with runners in scoring position.

No, I'm not. At Citizen's Bank Park, those areas where the fans are within regular tv background have signs warning you to limit cell phone use. The new stadiums bring fans much closer to the action and consequently, much closer to the tv angles, especially the camera angles of the batter from the first or thirdbase dugout cameras.

That last "29" may not stand up.... the ESPN site shows the ps gave up one earned run BUT the box score shows they gave up FOUR earned runs.

You must be CS' good luck charm! Now his Cubbies have pushed off the Brewers who were getting uncomfortably close in the standings. Or maybe he needs to be thanking JG for his jinx help.

Oh wait, what am I saying??!! CS doesn't care about any of this! He's an Astros fan!! grin
(Or Yankee fan...in case SB sees this. whistle )

I've been thinking about this a while now, and if by chance my boys don't make their incredible late-run comeback that I'm counting on (until we're mathematically out, by gosh!), and supposing it's still Chicago and Milwaukee fighting it out, I think I'd rather see the Cubs come out on top. I've developed a great distaste for Ryan Braun after seeing one too many of his arrogant home run rituals. Or maybe it's been just long enough since we've played Chicago for me to forget why I call them the Scrubs. tongue

I'm glad you're venturing into my division, but would you now mind taking the pitching staffs that my boys face? I'd really appreciate it! wink

Or why don't you make it work for you and take whoever the Yanks are facing? Or does that not work?

Re: 2008 Baseball Challenge: Weekly Edition - 08/01/08 06:43 AM

My powers only rely on my patented Anti-Jinx™... everything else gets cursed by the inherent Jinx of my previously-optimistic "mental decisions". ohwell

I've done the anti-Yanks thing on a day-to-day basis, and it's worked out! lol ...but I can't actually pick them in a weekly game! ...or can I? Hmmmm....

Re: 2008 Baseball Challenge: Weekly Edition - 08/01/08 07:00 AM

I'd suggest taking the pitching or players your guys will face most within the week (for a full series), and surely your "well wishes" toward that team will help your Yankees!

But now the Baseball Gods know the plan...maybe I should've whispered it...

I noticed you stayed with the Cubs.... it just may work out for ya (the way they've been playing).

I stayed with Manny Ramirez as my LF.... he's gone bonkers in his last two games with the Dodgers. I'm hoping he has something to prove and will continue this streak.

Bradley is questionable.... he MAY go on the DL, or he may be able to pinch hit.

Casilla is less likely to play.

Oh, I thought you were going to go the "came close" route. whistle

Re: 2008 Baseball Challenge: Weekly Edition - 09/25/08 08:40 PM

I have to say I was surprised that I actually liked this weekly game, even though it was a very disappointing season for me. I should be allowed the top spot for living in a non-baseball area. it should be in the rules.

as we agreed at one point, this game is more about luck than skill than the daily game. I kept playing the daily game even without a league and I still enjoy it very much. better. but yes, this weekly game got to me too. I say we should play both next season!

congratulations on the championship JG!
