Hi Turi - I am Adak1 - fairly new to the board. Thanks for setting up the group on the ESPN site. By the way, my predictions are more of a "wish list" rather than a realistic expectation.
Cheers.

Tell me something Turi, do we make ALL of our picks for each day listed at once?
Or should we make our picks on a daily basis?

8 days to go - get in!
DC, it's upto you and how seriously you take it. I'll be trying to look at team news and making my predictions as close to the games as possible. Obviously that isn't going to be always be realistic so I'll probably do 2-4 days picks at a time. Poland and Germany are the first teams to play twice (09/06 & 14/06) so I certainly wont be making my second Poland and Germany picks until I know what they've been like in their first games.
Also good to have you in mate.
I'm basically going to be choosing my predictions like Turi; seeing how the teams are progressing, because I'd like to see as many games as possible, like I usually do.
Also, I don't want my name to be "M. Corleone", as it currently is, so I've changed it to "E Raserhead", but it isn't showing yet on the BB list. Hmm...

Re: World Cup 2006 - Pick 'Em Game - 06/05/06 10:42 AM
M. Corleone seems a bit plain for you to use as your moniker. But good to have you in.
I don't think I need to post who's who, everyone's self explanatory. Everyone knows I wee in the bath and Sicilia knows nothing about soccer.

Also good to have you in mate. Smart to wait on your picks since Ronaldo has a fever, Gerrard has back spasms, Ballack has a calf strain, Sanchez (Mexico's #1 keeper) is headed home for a funeral, two Italians collected a recent injury, several Czech Republic players are injured and Cisse broke his leg. These all change the odds. Still, the teams that everyone typically picks are pretty deep.
I love how "Know Nothing About Soccer" is currently ranked at the top.
The Poles let me down. Bastards.

Re: World Cup 2006 - Pick 'Em Game - 06/10/06 05:34 PM
Hey, I watched a game/match (what's the correct term?) this morning. I watched England take on Paraguay.
Two thoughts...
1 - Refs call too many fouls.
2 - I love the running clock. It should be instituted in all sports. Question though - what determines the extra time at the end? Why doesn't the game end at 90 minutes?
The ref for the England game was ridiculous. Gerrard should never have been booked.
The game (or match; it doesn't matter) goes on with "stoppage time", or "injury time" for as many minutes as the ball has been out of play. Like in basketball, you don't get it, because the timer is stopped whenever the ball goes out of play. So, add up all the injuries and freekicks and whatnot, and you usually get about three to four minutes added on. If a team is already winning about 7-0 (like England will be in the final), you don't usually get much time added on...there's no point.
The Swedes let me down, the jerks. I hate goalless draws in a World Cup.

no not at all. the "stoppage time" at the end is all subjective, as most things in soccer.
and well, DB, you had a bad luck on the game you chosed to watch. that game sucked! I woke up before 12 AM in a saturday for the first time in a looooong time, and the game was not worth it. england sucked. argentina sucked in its opening match too.
You could say it was a typical England performance; full of energy and meeting expectations early on, and by the end, we barely scraped it. I don't know if it's out blood or not, but we seem to lack the killer instinct to finish off matches when needed.
Still, I shouldn't complain: it's obvious England are still going to win this tournament.
By the way, when (yes, when) I win this game, how will my name be initialised on the winners header?

Up to 5th and counting
Much better!
Spain looked good today as well.....
I love it how my bodily functions are at the mercy of football matches; I wet myself when Saudi Arabia went ahead tonight, but shit myself when Tunisia equalised. Good finish to a good game, but I had the Saudis to win. Glad I made a last minute decision to have Spain beat Ukraine.
I also love how Turi, Senza Mama and I are the bottom three.

Re: World Cup 2006 - Pick 'Em Game - 06/14/06 07:01 PM
I'm with JG. Ties stink.
In the league, yes, ties are allowed. Teams get one point for a draw, three for a win. But once you get to the knockout stages, there has to be a winner. Golden Goal (next goal wins) is played for thirty minutes, then it's onto a penalty shootout after that.

I guess that's one of the reasons football will never truly take off in the US. In football there's so much diversity to the talent of teams, for example, Togo are for the first time EVER in the world cup this year. For them to even get a draw and a point will be quite an achievment for them if they do it. Quite a contrast to most US sports where they're based on the same teams, salary caps and drafts etc. Because of that balance most teams can remain competitive or at least winning comes in cycles. Some countries and teams will never be able to be competitive on the world scale and have to base success on something other than winning it all. And of course, draws on the road (not applicable in this game really) against good and better teams are often good results. Those points add up.
Am I ranting like Plaw here? No he'd go on quite a bit longer.

Peter Crouch, Wayne Rooney and Steve Austin.
There, I've named three. I struggle after that.

seriously, I still didn't hear anything about his conditions, but that was u-g-l-y. anyway, only J. Cole and Gerrard matter in the English Squad. if it wasn't for such a luck out today, they would be on their way to face Germany and lose.
It seems fitting that our two players of the tournament so far both scored today.

How can you possibly predict a draw?? (The guy #1 on the leaderboard picked a few successfully -- I suppose you really need to know the sport)
10 of my Losses were due to tie games, as opposed to only 7 straight-up losses vs my 25 straight-up Wins.
Ah, what's the point. Starting Saturday there won't be any more draws... :p

I hate that I didn't had the time to join this game, due to tests as school.
Because I could've win this!!!
I mean, the so-called experts suck bigtime, and the rest barely knows a football teams consists out of 11 players.
I really hope there will be fantasy soccer games again on these boards. Champions League maybe...

I am pooling my resources for a late run to win it at the very end
Honestly.......

yeah, I admit, I suck. and there's no chance of comeback, since there are probably only 1 or 2 (or maybe no one) surprises left.
and by the way, OH MY GOD, the English Team sucks!!! these guys can't play a good game. I watched all of their 4 games and they SUCKED from the first 'til the last minute of all of them.
end of the road now, they'll get kicked out by whoever they face in the quarter finals. 4 years from now, both Cole and Gerrard will be past their prime, then it's over. god save the queen!

Re: World Cup 2006 - Pick 'Em Game - 06/25/06 06:12 PM
Yeah well will see not we,As long as we don't lose on the dreaded shoot-out
Ah, this is played real cute. They've made the favourites of each match play "Away", so to catch out those who just leave the fantasy league to play out for itself without making an effort.
As a result, I lost yesterday's two games, and the England game today, because I couldn't get to the computer. Ouch.
Just makes my eventual victory in this game even more impressive.
I must disagree with your rating of England's performance today, though, Tony. I thought we put in our best performance, with many plus-points to come out of it. We're playing gritty football, sufficiently good enough to knock Ecuador out. I have a feeling we're going to raise our game when needed. And so far, we haven't needed to.

Re: World Cup 2006 - Pick 'Em Game - 06/25/06 06:38 PM
yeah I see your point. I also believe they'll get at least a bit better (it'd take veeery little to do that).
but remember, if Sweden (actually, Paraguay) was a little luckier, you'd be out already.
If Serbia Montenegro were a little luckier, they may have beat Argentina 6-0.
Posted By: Tony Mosrite
Re: World Cup 2006 - Pick 'Em Game - 06/25/06 09:12 PM
well man I have to admit I based what I was saying in the false belief I had that if Sweden had beaten you 3-2 you'd be 3rd in the group. a little bit later I checked and found out I was wrong but I only bothered to come here apologize after the Portugal-Holland match - what-a-game! - anyway, I used the wrong argumment but I still think England is a bum team. and I say that because I know they have great players and I believe they should be one of the best teams in the tournament, but I am absolutely disappointed and I'm convinced sir Eriksson is one of the most overrated coaches I have ever seen.
England's chances are a lot better with the portuguese team falling apart, but I still believe Portugal will win.

Whatever Portugal and Argentina with their fast attacking people will eat you alive. Unless Terry and Ferdinand cut them in half. Which they can and will do.
Eriksson's not rated all that highly to begin with, really.

With all the flops, Manu Ginobili and Vlade Divac must have played soccer in a former life.
This game's a load of fucking tosser bollocks. I chose Ukraine to beat the Swiss, and they do (albeit on penalties), but I lose because it was 0-0? What the fuck is up with that?

IMO the ESPN games leave a lot to be desired. A lot of flaws in the way that they run and structure their fantasy games.
Hey Turi, you made some move in the standings over the last 48 hours! Way to go mate!

Re: World Cup 2006 - Pick 'Em Game - 06/29/06 11:27 AM
The last 16 games were all elementary as far as I was concerned. Only France beating Spain was the real surprise. I honestly thought the majority of us would be picking the same teams for all those games.
Now the Quarters are much more difficult. This'll split the men from the boys.
You're only up to second 'cause we all got fucked over by that Ukraine and Swiss game, Turi.
You're such a mug. Wanna fight?

Re: World Cup 2006 - Pick 'Em Game - 06/30/06 01:52 PM
You don't want to fight me, Mick. I'm a dirty fighter. I'd kick your shins and pull out your eyebrows. Then I'd lick your bum.
By the way ESPN fixed the point for the Ukraine game.
How the fuck are you joint second anyway, you bum-licking fanook?

Re: World Cup 2006 - Pick 'Em Game - 06/30/06 02:42 PM
When you're on the intro screen press Up, up, down, down, left, right. Then hold A till the screen flashes.
Actually that might be for Sonic on the Mega Drive.
Shit, man. I've been misinformed. I was told it was hold Select while pressing "Reset".

I'm pretty sure I know what's going to happen from now so now I think again that I can win it all. Portugal and Brazil win tomorrow, Germany beats Brazil in the final. that's how it's gonna be.

I'm a dickhead. I bet with my heart for the England game but, after telling everyone I know France was going to win and could even make a run for the cup, I still went for the safe Brazil pick.
I'm going to Germany to pick a fight with some undersized Portuguese fello.
I have four games left to win this. Who thinks I've left it a little late?
