Diamond Daily 2006 (Triple Crown Game) - 03/18/06 01:47 AM
If you missed April, come back in May!ESPN Diamond Daily http://games.espn.go.com/diamond/frontpage Gangster BB
Corleone
Object: Each day you select one batter and try to accumulate the highest totals in Home Runs (HR), Runs Batted In (RBI), and Average (AVG). You accumulate stats based on how your selected player performs on the day you select him. Choose your picks wisely!
Once a player has been used he expires and cannot be used again for the rest of the monthly segment. There are six monthly segments, April thru September.
Locktime: Noon ET daily, beginning
Sun, Apr 2 -- but you can assign players as far in advance as you want.
More: How to Play . Note: Sunday Night Baseball (SNB) count for double stats! Maximum # games played is -3 from monthly total, so you can miss 3 days/month.
2005 Winners: PL (May), JL (June), JG (July), JL (Aug), JG (Sep) (Not enough players in April)

Re: Diamond Daily 2006 (Triple Crown Game) - 04/01/06 06:37 PM
Only 4 People??
THIS STARTS TOMORROW, so make your pick TODAY or before Noon tomorrow for TOMORROW!Tomorrow's pitchers aren't listed yet. So you can make a pick and fine-tune before noon of gameday.
NOTE: Tomorrow is Sunday. All Sunday Night Baseball (players designated "SNB") games count DOUBLE! 2-3, 1HR = 3-6, 2HR (this is how Plaw won a month last year, with one ridiculous SNB line. :p ). This also means that going 0-3 = 0-6.
Each month is a new segment, and you are allowed to miss 3 games/month w/o effecting your score, in case a player doesn't play, or you forget to play.
You can, if you want, set up the whole month - or whole season for that matter. However, I suggest doing 3 days at a time so you can see opposing pitchers.
Remember: You can only use each player once/month! And each month has a different pool of players to choose from. You are looking for players to do the best in these 3 categories only: AVG, HR, RBI -- nothing else counts.
This game doesn't take a lot of time, so get your asses in here!

Didn't we only have 3 people last year?
These games are really taking off.
I won't do the other baseball game or obviously the yahoo game but hopefully this will keep my mind occupied

We had four, sometimes five...you, JG, JL, me (when I remembered to play), and SP (who remembered even less often than I did).

Looks like JL missed opening night, too, but it doesn't matter much... you get 3 free misses/month...

Well, I already made my pick for tmmw. so I don't have to worry about that. If you do it the day before every time I guess there shouldn't be any problems...

I wasn't going to play this game this year because it stinks. But I saw I was pretty god at it last year, so I got in.

Nothing like enhancing performance. That's why daylight saving time is such a good thing, it turns romance into an hour and 3 minutes

Yeah, well, try that on a Sunday night when everything is doubled... that's how Plaw won May '05... w/ A-Rod hitting like 3 HRs and getting like a gazillion RBI. Won
the whole month on one guy!!!

I think he's strictly a platooner with Reed Johnson. At least that's what they did last year.

How the hell do you remember that detail from last year??
Well, hopefully he'll play today since he's a good matchup w/ the pitcher... but w/ my luck...

Re: Diamond Daily 2006 (Triple Crown Game) - 04/05/06 08:08 PM
Yup, aside from Vernon Wells our Outfield is a bit shaky. Alex Rios has loads of potential at Right but he has yet to realize it. Here's hoping that this will be the year that he breaks out and goes on a tear. A lot of people think that Eric Hinske should get equal time at Right but I'm not one of them. Hinske, a former R.O.Y., has not turned out as Blue Jay fans expected he would. I say we trade him for whoever we can get. As I mentioned, V.W. is a rock at Centre and should win his third gold glove in a row. Really we only need Wells cuz I'm pretty sure that he could cover the whole field-turf at The SkyDome.
At Left Reed Johnson started yesterday and will platoon with Frank Catalanotto for most of the year most probably. Catalanotto is a much better hitter than Johnson (although Reed has moments of brilliance at the plate) but his defense is probably not as solid as Johnson's. My opinion, we should trade Hinske and Johnson (I like both players but if we can get some quality arms for them they have to go) and Catalonotto and Rios should play every day at Left and Right Field.
Frank Catalonotto has owned Brad Radke (.429, HR, 5 RBI) and will most likely get the start tonight. If "The Cat" is fresh he's usually good for a base hit at the least.

Re: Diamond Daily 2006 (Triple Crown Game) - 04/05/06 08:18 PM
No problem brother. I can't think of any reason why Johnny Gibbons would start R. Johnson and not Catalanotto. I just hope that whoever starts, they produce.

*Reminder - DJ, you're allowed 3 DNPs/month with no penalty. This is your 4th, so try not to miss any more. You can fill in players days in advance...
Actually, to clarify, there's also a MAX # of games played per month -- 3 less than the total. Those 3 you're allowed to miss only cuz they wouldn't count anyway. So near the end of the month, that can be a strategy...
Note to JL & DJ - Remember you need 90 ABs/month to qualify for AVG...

Hey Don Malta, I thought I've only missed 3 games so far. Why would I be assessed the penalty for missing the 3 games that I'm allowed to miss anyways?
What would the penalty be anyways?

Re: Diamond Daily 2006 (Triple Crown Game) - 04/21/06 08:25 AM
What, wha, wha?! Gibbons had to go with Useless Hinske instead of Alex Rios that day eh?! If I remember the full (9 inning) game wasn't even played. Doesn't that factor into this game? Anywho, whatever, nevermind. What is the penalty exactly?

Re: Diamond Daily 2006 (Triple Crown Game) - 04/21/06 08:28 AM
There's no "penalty" for missing more than three games other than the potential points that you could've gotten that you don't get.

Re: Diamond Daily 2006 (Triple Crown Game) - 04/21/06 08:32 AM
Not much of a penalty then, imo. I've got Craig Biggio today, hopefully the hit by a pitch King has a decent game. They're playing The Pirates so it shouldn't be too too hard for him to pull out at the very least a basehit but hopefully a couple of Grand Slams.
:p

Re: Diamond Daily 2006 (Triple Crown Game) - 04/21/06 08:36 AM
Well, if you wind up missing too many games it can be tough to reach the 90 ABs you need to qualify for batting average, and unles you have a few really good days to make up for the days you miss, you're gonna lose some Homers and RBIs also.

Re: Diamond Daily 2006 (Triple Crown Game) - 04/21/06 08:42 AM
P.L. that is absolutely true, but I thought that seeing as how this game is not extremely challenging (It's not freakin rocket science or brain surgery
) the penalty might be something say more arbitrary. However, the penalty is perfectly fair to me. In this game if you miss your pick you face the consequences. Perfectly reasonable. The onus is on the players of the game to remember to play the game. Having said all this I hope...that...

Yeah, but that's only 7/27. When dealing with low numbers, I'm never surprised to see them.
After 45 years of figuring out batting averages, I know a bunch of them by heart.....
3/11: 272 272 272 272 272
4/15: 266 666 666 666 666
5/21: 238095 23809 238095 238095
And some I don't know by heart
Here'a a cute one:
6/17: .3529411764705882... 3529411764705882... 3529411764705882
(Edit: Or this one I found just now - Noah Lowry's FPs and Starts, in figuring out his FPPG:
31/7: 4.428571 428571 428571)
etc., etc....
But not that surprising or "neat" to find; I just about
expect one in those cases when dealing with "low" numbers.
It's when you get up into dividing those big numbers - get into the 100's and 1000's - that they're a surprise.
Like when I did 4951/592, I didn't expect to see a neat number like .83631 756 756 756 756 756......
Change the last digit in one of those nuumbers - make it 591 or 593 or 4950 or 4952 - and then divide, and you get nothing interesting.
Make up a 4-digit number and divide it by a made up 3-digit number, and you'll usually get nothing interesting.

One of you guys - JG or DM, anyway - refresh my memory if you can.
How does ESPN determine among the four of us who is in first, who is in second, etc.?
The reason I ask is 'cuz it would be helpful to know that - I think, anyway - in deciding which categories to concentrate on.
Anyway....If it were up to me - and maybe the way we could or should do it if we can't figure out how ESPN does it, or don't like the way they do it - is by taking all 3 categories and awarding 4 points for being in first place in a category, three points for being in second, two points for being in third, and one point for being in fourth.
Which would make this month's standings look like this:
AVG HR RBI TOT
PL 4.0 3.5 2.0 9.5
DJ 1.0 3.5 4.0 8.5
JG 2.0 2.0 3.0 7.0
DM 3.0 1.0 1.0 5.0
Based on this:
H/AB HR RBI AVG
PL 15/40 4 7 .375
DM 12/40 0 6 .300
JG 13/44 2 8 .295
DJ 8/32 4 9 .250
I know we went through this once before....
DJ is first in one category and tied for first in another, yet he's last.
Meanwhile, DM is second in one category, but last in the other two, and he's second.
I seem to recall that they base our standings on something to do with how we are doing compared to everyone else in the wrold who is playing the game, but for our purposes wouldn't it be better to just rate ourselves against each other?

Re: Diamond Daily 2006 (Triple Crown Game) - 06/13/06 10:47 PM
Since Day 1 I've always ranked by AVG -- for really no reason except it was the easiest way to do it, since there were few ties. However, since ESPN seems to rank in a way similiar to how you propose, I suppose I could just keep the standings in the order they present them.
Therefore, it'd be as such:
June 13

6/13 H/AB HR RBI AVG H/AB HR RBI AVG
PL Wright 15/40 4 7 .375
DJ Rolen 8/32 4 9 .250

DM Giambi 12/40 0 6 .300
It may take me some time to remember to do that, tho...

Maybe margin of victory in a category has something to do with it, or should.
We should have a clear-cut objective way of knowing who won.
What if three different people each win one category?
Suppose we have 5 players. Who would you give the win to here? On a 5-4-3-2-1 basis, everyone has 9 points:
AVG. HR RBI
Player A .325 5 20
Player B .350 3 21
Player C .275 4 23
Player D .300 7 19
Player E .250 6 22
Same here:
AVG. HR RBI
Player A .250 7 16
Player B .325 6 14
Player C .350 4 15
Player D .300 3 19
Player E .275 5 17
And here:
AVG. HR RBI
Player A .300 6 14
Player B .250 7 15
Player C .350 5 13
Player D .275 4 17
Player E .325 3 16

Re: Diamond Daily 2006 (Triple Crown Game) - 06/14/06 06:34 AM
I don't use a "5-4-3-2-1 basis", so that point is rather moot. I haven't had a problem declaring a clear winner in all the months we've played over the years. At least no one's ever complained, so no sense in changing it now, especially mid-season. However, if a senario like that comes up in the future, I will default to ESPN...

Re: Diamond Daily 2006 (Triple Crown Game) - 06/14/06 10:17 AM
So if someone wins two (or all three, obviously) out of the three categoties, then they're the winner?
That makes sense.
And if three different people each win one of the categories, then your'e gonna go by whatever ESPN says?
Which brings me back to my original question:
One of you guys - JG or DM, anyway - refresh my memory if you can.
How does ESPN determine among the four of us who is in first, who is in second, etc.?
I guess I'll read the rules and see if I can figure it out.

Re: Diamond Daily 2006 (Triple Crown Game) - 06/14/06 10:56 AM
OK, here's how ESPN does it:
They don't.
The game is based on determining a first place finisher in each of the three categories for each of the monthly segments.
There is no "overall" winner for each month.
If you go to our group's homepage, the default ESPN uses in listing our order is "Average".
If you click on "Home Runs" it will re-sort us into that order; Same thing if you click on "RBIs".
So unless you're gonna say that if three different people win each of the three categories then the winner for the month is the leader in Batting Average, we don't have a way pf deciding who wins in the event that that happens.
May I suggest a 4-3-2-1 system?
Then, all we need is a tiebreaker.
IMO, RBI's are, to a great degree, a matter of luck - they're largely a function of opportunities, unlike home runs or batting average, which are categories that are more indicitive of a player's individual skill.
That's why you often get a much greater swing in a player's RBI totals from year to year than you do in their home run totals and batting average.
So, if you believe that to be a valid asumption, it takes more skill to finish first in the Home Run or Batting Average category.
So I would pick the leader in one of those categories as the tiebreaker.
Or, we could try and work out some kind of formula which weighs the margin of victory in the various catgories.
In a case like this:
AVG. HR RBI
Player A 35/112, .313 4 18
Player B 33/110, .300 5 22
Player C 31-112, .286 9 20
Each player won one category, but Player C's margin of victory in the category
he won was much greater than the margins of victory of the other two.
But if the tiebreaker is Batting Average, Player A wins.
Or, we could work out a system where each category is valued differently, based on the skill required to win the category (altho I'm not sure how I would go about doing that).
The only other "problem" is - if you regard it as a problem - is that using a 4-3-2-1 system as the tiebreaker in the event that no one wins at least two of the categories could lead to a situation in which someone does win two out of three categories, but has fewer "4-3-2-1- Points" than someone else.

Re: Diamond Daily 2006 (Triple Crown Game) - 06/14/06 03:12 PM
I guess, according to the Rules, ESPN picks 3 winners then. And you must win all 3 for the Triple Crown (that makes sense).
However -- they
do have a
Triple Crown Leaderboard . I've always wondered the formula they use to determine the standings, as it's not too clear looking at it.
Why don't you ask them?
baseball@fantasygames.go.com But FWIW, I've always sorted by AVG because I thought that was the best indicator of talent, of the 3 stats. It may not indicate the most production (RBI) or power (HR), but -- to me -- indicates the most talent. And, as I said, we're more likely to have unique AVG scores than HRs & RBI.
Most of the time we've had a clear winner -- someone winning 2 or 3 of the categories. I suppose we could work out a tie breaking system if we need it. So I'd be curious how ESPN determines their Triple Crown standings....

"Not too clear" is putting it mildly.
They have guys with higher totals in all three categories listed below guys with lower totals in all three.
Why don't
you contact them? You're the commish
:p
.
Seriously, winning 2 out of 3 is fine for picking the winner.
If you want to say that the tiebreaker is batting average if we have three different winners, that's fine also.
Or a 4-3-2-1 system, with batting average as the tiebreaker for
that, it's OK with me.
Whatever you say.
But let's just decide now, so if and when it
does happen it's clear to everyone what our rules are.

I wrote: I was wondering how you determine the standings for the Triple Crown Leaders ... what formula do you use? Shouldn't "AVG %" be in order? The guys tied for #7 right now have better stats in all three categories then the guy listed #1...?
PS - Any chance you could add whether a pitcher is Righty or Lefty when you hover over their names, like you do with the batters?
They replied: We organize them by avg. rank, meaning who is performing better on average in every one of the 3 categories. We will take your suggestion regarding lefties and righties into consideration next time we update the game. Thanks for the input.

You still need to decide and post what the tiebreaker is if we have a different winner in each of the three categories.
You wanna use average, fine. Or homers or RBIs.....Whatever you like.
Just let us know, because it could make a difference in strategy, not to mention the avoiding of arguments if you make a decision after the fact.
Originally posted by J Geoff:

Apparently the system involves the size of the lead in the categories, or, as they explained it, how someone is foing relative to everyone else.
My lead in average and homers is tiny, while DJ's lead in RBI's is much greater, so I'd guess that has something to do with it.
Also, I don't think they're ranking us as being within a separate league, but rather as how we are doung - in total - compared to everyone else.
(I know I didn't explain that very well.)

I guess AVG first, then HR, then RBI...
Good?

Re: Diamond Daily 2006 (Triple Crown Game) - 06/16/06 07:18 PM
Whatever you say is fine with me, just so we know, although IMO a 4-3-2-1 system would be more accurate because it reflects how we are doing in relation to our entire group and takes into account all the categories.
However, as I say, whatever you wish is fine with me.

Re: Diamond Daily 2006 (Triple Crown Game) - 06/17/06 05:44 AM
Thinking about it some more, I guess I like the 4-3-2-1 method for deciding the winner, period, instead of going by whoever wins two categories, with average as the tiebreaker.
In this scenario:
4-3-2-1
AVG. HR RBI Points
Player A 35-100, .350 3 12 6
Player B 34-100, .340 8 22 10
Player C 33-100, .330 6 23 8
Player D 32-100, .320 7 21 6
Players A, B, & C each win one category, but Player A wins your way because he won Batting Average, while Player B, who clearly had the better month, wins in a 4-3-2-1 set-up.
Or here:
4-3-2-1
AVG. HR RBI Points
Player A 35-102, .343 6 13 9
Player B 35-103, .340 5 21 10
Player C 33- 98, .337 4 15 7
Player D 33- 99, .333 3 14 4
Player A wins your way because he won two categories, but with a 4-3-2-1 system Player B, who clearly had the better month, wins.
In this scenario
4-3-2-1
AVG. HR RBI Points
Player A 22-100, .220 6 20 9.0
Player B 35-103, .340 5 19 9.5
Player C 33- 98, .337 5 18 7.0
Player D 33- 99, .333 4 18 4.5
Player A wins under your system, while he arguably had the
worst month of the three, while Player B, who arguably had the best month wins in a 4-3-2-1 setup

Re: Diamond Daily 2006 (Triple Crown Game) - 06/18/06 02:03 AM
here are my 2 cents. I always thought each statistical category should be given a point value. For instance each homerun gets 50 points, each RBI gets 25 points and say 1000 points for Average (i.e. a .220 average gives you 220 points etc..) The person with the most points wins.
The problems with all of the systems seems to be that it doesn't reward anyone for doing better than everyone else. Plaw's 4-3-2-1 system is good but holding average constant did a person with 6 hrs and 8 rbis have a better month than someone with 5 hrs and 25 rbis?

So, JG.....
If the month were over based on the totals so far, I'd be the winner, right?
Suppose I win in batting average, and someone else wins in RBIs, and we tie in home runs?
Do I win because average is the tiebreaker?

Ex-Commishes don't win anything once they quit their job. :p
But FWIW, I think 17 more RBI is worth more than .035 in BA... so no, probably not. But as I said, come 30/31 days into it, it hasn't been an issue (yet) after all these years...

Yeah, but one day it may be a problem.
How can we have a game without knowing what the basis for winning or breaking a tie is?
If it seems like I'm breaking balls, sorry, but this is silly.
I agree, 17 more RBIs is worth more than .035 in batting average.
So where do you want to draw the line? Suppose the differnce is greater in average, and less in RBIs? How much greater or less swings the balance to the other player?
When I ask if the season ended based on the stats I quoted and you say "no,
probably not", that doesn't strke you as a problem?
What you seemingly want to do is decide, subjectively once the month is over, who the winner is if nobody wins 2 out of the 3 categories.
I say that just like in any other game, it needs to be spelled out exactly so there are no arguments.

Re: Diamond Daily 2006 (Triple Crown Game) - 07/19/06 05:17 PM
Like should I go strictly for an RBI guy now, or try to increase my lead in average, or go for homers, or what?
Just to be redundant here....
You said average would be the tiebreaker.
I lead in average, and I'm tied for the lead in homers.
DJ lead in RBIs, and is tied for the lead in homers.
So, in effect, we each lead in one category and are tied for the lead in another.
So if average is the tiebreaker, how would I not be the winner, since I lead in the tiebreaker category?
If you want to say that a lead of 17 RBIs is worth more than a lead of .035 in average, fine - I agree that it is - but then you're making RBIs the tiebreaker.
Where do you want to draw the line?
How about a 10 RBI lead vs. .050 in average?
How about a 5 RBI lead vs. .035 in average?
How about a 20 RBI lead vs. .100 in average?
How about any of the thousands of different possibilities?
Give us something definite to go on so it's not simply a judgement call on your part when the month is over.

I think its interesting (I use that term loosely) to look at ESPN's scoring for this game.
.035 in batting average is worth more than 6 rbis.
8 rbis is worth more than 1 hr and .056 in batting average.
Kinda screwy if you ask me.

As near as I can figure, their rankings are not based on how we're doing against each other within our group, but how we're doing against everyone else world-wide in each of the categories individually.
FWIW, look at the Leader Board, though.
Last time I did, they had guys who trailed other guys in all three categoties listed ahead of the guys they trailed.
Go figure
As long as we're sticking to our method of deciding on our winner - win at least two out of the three categories, or if three different people win one each, then the tiebeaker is Batting Average.
That
is how we're doing it, right?

I will go to my grave believing that we should have points for each category. I personally don't think its right that I can have 10hr, 50 rbi and .400 ba, and someone can have 11hr, 12 rbi and .401 ba and win.
Just my .02

Re: Diamond Daily 2006 (Triple Crown Game) - 07/23/06 08:53 AM
I'm inclined to agree with you, but the problem is assigning the relative values.
How many homers is 10 RBIs worth, or 12 RBIs, or 15, or 20? How many points of batting average is 5 homers worth, or 6, or 7, or 8, etc., etc., etc., etc.....
DJ leads you by 6 RBIs. You lead him by 35 points in average.
Which is worth more?
The 35 points in average?
OK....suppose it was 34 points? How about 33? or 32?
How many RBIs is that 35 points of average worth?
Suppose he led you by 7 RBIs? Or 8? Or 9?
How many RBIs offset 35 points in average?
There's an awful lot of possibilities here - tens of thousands, realistically, I'd guess.

Re: Diamond Daily 2006 (Triple Crown Game) - 07/23/06 09:33 AM
How about this:
1 point per one point of batting average.
10 points per RBI
25 points per HR
I figured that based on about 100 ABs, 100 points in batting average was 10 more hits, so I figured 10 more RBIs should be worth about the same, so it's really sort of kind of maybe 1 point per hit when you get to the end of the month and 10 points per RBI.
I figured homers were the hardest to get, so they should be worth the most.
I'm not necessarily saying that this is what we should do, BTW -- just throwing some numbers out there.
So based on the above, this month would be as follows:
PL 12 25 .456 or 300 + 250 + 456 = 1006
DJ 11 39 .365 or 275 + 390 + 365 = 1030
DM 11 33 .400 or 275 + 330 + 400 = 1005
JG 8 15 .271 or 200 + 150 + 271 = 621

So if the month was over now, I'd be the winner, right?
Whoever wins 2 out of 3 categories, with average as the tiebreaker, right?
I agree, BTW, that margin of victory in a category should be weighted, and included.
If I tie DM in homers and beat him in average by 15 points, and he beats me in RBIs by 10 or 12, or
If i beat him by one homer and 10-15 points in average, and he wins RBIs by 10-12....
How about this for a scoring method that weights the categories
1 point per one point of batting average.
10 points per RBI
25 points per HR
I figured that based on about 100 ABs, 100 points in batting average was 10 more hits, so I figured 10 more RBIs should be worth about the same, so it's really sort of kind of maybe 1 point per hit when you get to the end of the month and 10 points per RBI.

something though.

Well, you
could just go with whomever you think will do the best, but if you need to know, sure, we'll try your method this month - even tho it's never been a problem in the past...
Posted By: plawrence
Re: Diamond Daily 2006 (Triple Crown Game) - 07/26/06 10:26 AM
Oy....
What do you mean "whoever I think will do best"?
In which category?
And no, we shouldn't try my method this month -- we've been playing the whole month under a certain set of assumptions.
Now you want to change the criteria with 6 days to go?
You want to try it, let's try it next month.
AFAIC, this month should be what you said it was way back when:
Th winner is whoever wins two out of the three categories.
If no one does, the tiebreaker is Batting Average.

I don't feel the need to change it either.
But DM raised some interesting points, last month and again this month, which I agred with.
The problem is that when I first raised the subject last month because it seemed like it might be really close, and then again this month for the same reason, it seemed as though you started to equivocate and waver about exactly what the criteria for winning was.
AFAIC, the citeria for winning - which is what it always has been and which I have no real need to change (I was only suggesting alternate methods because you seemed unhappy with the method you were using, hence your equivocation, and I thought that altho the way we were doing it was OK, there might be a better way - and so did DM) - is as follows:
Win two out of three categories. If no one wins two out of three, then the tiebreaker is Batting Average.
Just tell us for sure that that's the way we're doing it, and it's the last you'll hear from me on the subject.
Look at the race between me and DM this month.
If I know for sure that batting Average is the tiebreaker, I might sit out and force him to catch me .
He's at 35-82, .427.
I'm at 40-91, .440
If I play and go a simple 0-4, and he plays and goes a simple 2-4, DM passes me in batting Average, as I drop to .421 and he goes up to .430
But if I sit out, then he needs to go 6-10 or better to pass me.
What should I do? Play or not? It looks like it will be much harder for him to catch me if I don't play, right?
That's why I have to know for sure what the scoring system is.
Surely you can't think I'm being unreasonable here, can you?

Re: Diamond Daily 2006 (Triple Crown Game) - 07/26/06 11:36 PM
Not at all.
The object of the game is to win. Why should I make it easier for the competition?
That's like saying that a guy in a poker game who is winning and knows that the game is gonna end after 3 more hands is a wuss if he goes out each of the 3 hands and doesn't give the other people a chance to win their money back.
And fer chrissakes.....
Could you please answer the question already, once and for all?

OMG... after all that, this month we're doing it the way we've always done it. If a problem arises, then we'll think of something for the future.

Re: Diamond Daily 2006 (Triple Crown Game) - 07/27/06 09:29 AM
Thank you.....
Now, I think the thing is to plan things
before a problem actually occurs.
We know what the scenario is that bothers us:
Someone wins Batting Average and a second category, both by small margins (how small?), and loses the third category by a large margin (how large?).
The question is, do we want to change the scoring system or live with the possibility of an outcome in a future month that seems unfair?
If we want to change it, let's decide now and do it, before next month begins.
If we wait, and next month starts to shape up like there will be a problem, people's opinions about what to do may be influenced by their own self-interest.

Re: Diamond Daily 2006 (Triple Crown Game) - 07/27/06 09:39 AM
If all your figures are correct, DM is 38/86 and batting .442, not 39-86 (.453), so I changed it.
Now one person leads another in batting average by a tiny margin, the player who is second in batting average by the tiny margin leads in RBIs by a tiny margin, and there's a 3-way tie in Home Runs.

Re: Diamond Daily 2006 (Triple Crown Game) - 07/28/06 07:52 PM
Let me think aloud here and break it down, see if anything happens...
First off, the
Triple Crown Leaderboard doesn't make any sense at all. The guy in 11th Place has more of all 3 than the guy listed #1. And the AVG % scores aren't even in order. In fact, nothing's in order from what I can see, so either we're all idiots, or, ESPN are idiots. I'm thinking the latter.
As for the Main (July)
Leaderboard ... they default the list ranking w/ HRs. And in there "tiebreakers" section, they seem to favor HRs, then RBI, then AVG. They treat it, tho, as 3 games in 1 - with the person who wins all 3 getting the Triple Crown.
For HR "game" the first tiebreaker is RBI, then AVG
For RBI "game" the first tiebreaker is HR, then AVG
For AVG "game" the first tiebreaker is HR, then RBI
Personally, I don't agree that HRs should
necessarily indicate the most VALUE. HRs don't necessarily win games as much as RBIs - but at the same time, RBIs are dependent upon who's on base already (out of your control). I think AVG is quite important, because the more hits you get, the more likely you are to drive in runs and win games. I'll look at that in a bit, but for now...
Another thing to consider, and perhaps this explains how ESPN ranks us. Here's a chart of how we're doing, with our overall percentile rankings for each category. I also added a column for AB's, out of curiosity. The standings are ESPN's default:
HR RBI AVG ABs %ile (HR/RBI/AVG)
DM 13 42 .438 89 95.4 / 98.0 / 96.2
PL 13 31 .447 94 95.4 / 82.8 / 97.2
DJ 13 43 .358 95 95.4 / 98.5 / 68.5
JG 11 26 .298 121 59.5 / 53.0 / 41.0
DA 3 10 .386 44 19.8 / 20.0 / 29.1
Okay, maybe this tells us nothing.
If they seemed to prefer HRs and then RBIs, DJ would be ahead of PL. Okay, screw that chart.
We need to decide which is most important: HR, RBI or AVG. Let's see...
Mauer has a .375 AVG w/ 8 HR, 54 RBI
Dunn has a .261 AVG w/ 31 HR, 71 RBI
Dunn produced 71 RBI for his team while hitting only 26% of the time. Mauer produced 54 RBI for his team while hitting 37.5% of the time. Who's worth more?
Mauer produced 54 RBI in 328 ABs = 6 ABs/RBI
Dunn produced 71 RBI in 364 ABs = 5.1 ABs/RBI
Does that tell us anything? Dunn produces more often, albeit mostly from HRs. MIN has scored 502 runs (11% from Mauer) and CIN 511 runs (14% from Dunn). Granted this is a small sample, but perhaps says something about HRs being more important than AVG. It also assumes that RBI are the most important indicator, even tho who's on base is out of the batter's control.
You
would think that the more HRs you hit, the higher your RBI total
should be, but that's not true in PL's case. He has the highest AVG, same HRs, but trails in RBI by over 10.
Looking at the standings again, and assuming that the stats are from "one batter" who hit those stats, who was most valuable? Let's take a look at the Top 3:
DM 39/89 13 42 .438 - Productive & efficient
PL 42/94 13 31 .447 - Hits worth less to the team?
DJ 34/95 13 43 .358 - Most productive, less efficient
I suppose Efficiency could mean overall production w/ the least amount of work (ABs). OR, what if it meant overall production
when one produces (with lesser AVG)?
If the season ended with the stats above, I'd probably declare DMC the winner, even tho in the past I probably would've just looked at it and awarded it to DJ. But it is obvious that 1 RBI difference doesn't make up for .080 less in AVG. Is it? Or isn't it? What about PL's high AVG but 11 fewer RBI?
However, it's more difficult determining who'd be in 2nd and 3rd. If PL had 40 RBI, then he'd be arguably the 1st Place winner, followed by DM and DJ. But he doesn't. Should he be considered #2 if DM is #1? Is being down 11 RBI worth more than .089 in AVG (i.e., is .447
significantly better than .358)? Just
visually looking at the Top 3, I'd probably put PL #3 just because of the lack of RBI. But the question remains - what if he had 33, or 36, or 38, or 39??
But wait one second here!Maybe THIS is how ESPN ranks us... Let's look at that %ile chart again, and compute "scores" by adding our 3 %ile ranks:
HR RBI AVG ABs %ile (HR/RBI/AVG) TOT %ile
DM 13 42 .438 89 95.4 / 98.0 / 96.2 289.6
PL 13 31 .447 94 95.4 / 82.8 / 97.2 275.4
DJ 13 43 .358 95 95.4 / 98.5 / 68.5 262.4
JG 11 26 .298 121 59.5 / 53.0 / 41.0 153.5
DA 3 10 .386 44 19.8 / 20.0 / 29.1 68.9
Could that be it? Could our standings be determined by how we're each doing versus everyone else playing the game, combined? Should it? Shouldn't it??
If PL's high AVG is better than 97.2% of everyone overall, and DM's RBI are better than 98% overall, then didn't DM do a little better?
DJ got the highest RBI total (98.5% overall), but his AVG is only 68.5% overall, well less than PL's 97.2%.
Could this be our answer??
Everything else remaining the same, if DJ gets one or two more HRs and DM and PL don't, will the increase in %ile ranking push him to #1 for most HRs and RBI, despite AVG?
I don't fucking know - but I do know I'm getting a headache.

???
Explain to me how if the seson ended with the stats above, based on the way you said we were doing it this month, I am not the winner.
There's a three-way tie in homers, I lead in average, DJ leads in RBIs.
We're tied for the lead in one category, and each lead by ourselves in another.
But I lead in average, which is the tiebreaker.
The fact that I didn't win home runs outright, but instead I'm in a 3-way tie for winning homers doesn't matter.
If the ctireria for winning is whoever wins the most categories, we have a tie with oone win a piece.
But i still have the tiebreaker.
Talk about fuzzy math....I wanna hear the fuzzy logic that tells me I didn't win if the season ended with the stats above.

If we did it they way I (the commish) have always done it, I think he'd win. You came up with the AVG tiebreaker, conveniently since you had a nice high AVG. But we still have the rest of tonight and tomorrow night, so let's not bicker about this now, for the 100th time. :p
As far as not knowing what you were thinking picking Rivera... he was hitting against Schilling. I didn't think he'd do anything special, having never gotten a hit against him. That's all.
And good, Lackey screwed up so I'm not sorry I benched him any more.
And shit, I wish Philly (except for Howard) would ease up on my PS.

So where do you want to draw the line? Suppose the differnce is greater in average, and less in RBIs? How much greater or less swings the balance to the other player?
When I ask if the season ended based on the stats I quoted and you say "no, probably not", that doesn't strke you as a problem?
What you seemingly want to do is decide, subjectively once the month is over, who the winner is if nobody wins 2 out of the 3 categories.

AFAIC, this month should be what you said it was way back when:
The winner is whoever wins two out of the three categories.
If no one does, the tiebreaker is Batting Average. Originally posted by J Geoff:

But DM raised some interesting points, last month and again this month, which I agreed with.

Just make a decision.
My only complaint is that after you said that for the month of July you were gonna continue to decide the winner based on the way we always had --
The winner is whoever wins two categories,
If no one wins two, then Batting Average is the tiebreaker --
You started to waver.
So I take all of that to mean that if no one wins two categories, the tiebreaker is batting average.
That’s why I sat out the night that I did – to protect my lead in batting average.
How can you say a day before the month ends and after saying twice the batting average is the tiebreaker, that now maybe you’ll pick the winner some other way?
I'll say this yet agian:
use any scoring system you like.
Keep doing it where the winner is whovever wins two categories, and pick a tiebreaker.
Use a 4-3-2-1 system.
Use a system that weights the totals.
I DON'T CARE.
Just pick something and stick to it,unless you want to change it at the beginning of the month.
But don;t tell me we were playing this month based on any other scenario but the first, or that it was me who said batting average should be the tiebreaker because I had the lead in that category.

I suppose Efficiency could mean overall production w/ the least amount of work (ABs). OR, what if it meant overall production when one produces (with lesser AVG)?
If the season ended with the stats above, I'd probably declare DMC the winner, even tho in the past I probably would've just looked at it and awarded it to DJ. But it is obvious that 1 RBI difference doesn't make up for .080 less in AVG. Is it? Or isn't it? What about PL's high AVG but 11 fewer RBI? Seriously...
How can you run a game with no objective criteria for winning?
A game in which "(you'd) probably declare DMC the winner, even tho in the past (you) probably would've just looked at it and awarded it to DJ."
After you said I don't know how many times that the winner has always been the person who won 2 out of 3 categories, and if no one did the tiebreaker would be batting average.
If you're gonna change that, can you decide before Tuesday?

For the LAST time, can you please just wait 'til tomorrow is over? Honestly. It's NEVER been a problem before - and no one has ever complained - until you brought this up a few weeks ago. And now this could be the 1st month of many with a "problem".
Obviously I need new criteria to make you happy. I will announce it on Day 1 of August. And to further make you happy, and if it helps you sleep better tonight, then congrats - you're the winner, and we don't even need to play tomorrow. :p

I just want to know what the criteria is.
And that's the only thing I'm complaining about - not knowing.
And how can you say I won the month already and don't have to play tomorrow?
What happens if DM winds up winning homers and RBIs - two categories - to my one?
Doesn't he then win?
Is this a conspiracy to make me think I'm going crazy or something, like you see in the movies?

Yeah, it does....
I didn't think DJ taking Mirabelli yesterday was too funny.
Maybe I'm losing my sense of humor in my old age, but I
can tell you that aggravation is not good for me.
As far as taking Rivera yesterday is concerned:
Going into yesterday I was in second place (I led in BAvg, DM led in HRs and RBIs).
Howard was the best of who was available tomorrow, especially since homers was the category I needed to make up ground in, but DM figured to take Howard and taking the same player as he did couldn't help me any.
The "best of the rest" for me to pick from was Rivera, I thought, since he's been so hot lately.

I didn't notice your long post above 'til now. I agreed to use AVG as the tie-breaker (the idea that was planted in my head by you, twice, before I caved and agreed to :p ), and will use that this month if it's necessary.
However, going forward, I think the winner should be the person with the highest combined %ile scores for all three categories. That makes the most sense to me. With that criteria, going into tonight, DMC (293.4) would win, followed by PL (279.8) and DJ (264.4).

Re: Diamond Daily 2006 (Triple Crown Game) - 07/31/06 04:43 PM
No, you were the one who suggested batting average as the tiebreaker because that was the category in which there was least likely to be a tie.
And if you look at the thread, you will see that I only suggested batting average as the tiebreaker in the context of
“If you wanna use batting average as the tiebreaker, fine. Or HRs, or RBIs, or whatever”
But most importantly, if you look at the dates of the posts, especially the one where you finally agreed to use average as the tiebreaker, I was not in the lead in batting average, so don’t say that I was suggesting average because I had a big lead in that category and was suggesting it out of self interest.
Don't give me this junk about how I planted the idea in your head and you "caved".
I was behind in batting average at the time - look at the scores you were posting.
Now....
As far as going forward is concerned, do it any way you want, as long as everyone knows that this is how we do it and it won't get changed in mid-month.
If you want my opinion, I don't like the idea that it treats each category equally and
I don't like the idea that it bases the winner of our league on how we do against the whole world instead of how we do against each other.
There can be a substantial difference. If you don't see how, I'll explain.
But, as I say, I don't really care how you do it.

Please do.
If it's compelling enough, then I'll make the combined %ile rankings the tie-breaker instead.

Re: Diamond Daily 2006 (Triple Crown Game) - 07/31/06 05:28 PM
What I said I don't like...that it decides our winner based on how we do against the rest of the world instead of each other....
Suppose that it's just you, me, and DM, and at the end of the month, thee are our totals:
HR RBI AVG.
PL 13 39 .340
JG 12 55 .330
DM 11 40 .333
Based on some kind of method of "weighted" the scores in each category, I'd say that you should be the winner because your big lead in RBIs more than offsets the small amount that you trail by in homers and average.
But if you throw us into aleague with 7 other people and go by percentile rankings, like so
HR (pct) RBIs (pct) Avg. (pct) Total
Player 1 17 60 .400
Player 2 16 59 .375
Player 3 15 57 .360
Player 4 14 56 .334
PL 13 60% 39 30% .335 70% 160
DM 12 50% 42 50% .333 50% 150
JG 11 40% 55 60% .330 40% 140
Player 5 10 41 .300
Player 6 9 38 .290
Player 7 8 37 .280
Because of the large differnce between 5th and 6th place in RBIs, DM and I can be way behind you in raw totals, but not lose much on a perentile basis because no one had between 55 and 42 RBIs to fill in those "missing places" and drop us further in percentile.
Obviously an extreme example, but you should get the idea.
If there's a month when you have, say 50 RBIs and I have 48, but there are a zillion people with 49, I will lose a lot more "percentil points" than a difference of 2 RBIs is worth.
And, as in the example above, vice-versa.
If you have 50 RBIs for the month and I have only 42, but there are a disproportionatley low number of players in between, I will not lose as many "percentile points" as an 8 RBI difference should be worth.

Re: Diamond Daily 2006 (Triple Crown Game) - 07/31/06 08:52 PM
So doing it the way you suggest places a differnt value on each individual stat (HRs, RBIs, and BA), which changes daily depending on the performance of people that we are not even competing against.
It also forces you, to some extent, to strategize in the "blind" - not know what type of hitter to go for, power or average, on a given day - because of the "world" has a good day for homers and you went for homers, your home runs are worth less, and vice-versa.
I'd rather we decide on one constant value for all of the different stats in relation to each other, and then just compete agianst each other, since in effect we are playing a different game.
We are looking to establish one winner for all three categories cumulatively.
ESPN is just trying to find a separate winner in each category, and possibly one winner for all three.
But they don't care if someone wins two out of the three.
If you want to stick with the "whoever wins 2 out of 3" method, that's OK with me, but the tiebreaker should not be RBIs, since that is the category most dependent on luck.
If you want the most important category, I'd say homers, because each homer is guaranteed to produce at least one run for a team, while a guy can go 4-4 and not help his team at all.
Homers also is probably the category which requires the most skill, since guys get robbed on great fielding plays and get cheap hits every day and no, it doesn't necessarily even out.
Problem with homers is that of all the categories, homers has the best chance for a tie.
I'd vote for the "weighted categories" method that I proposed earlier.
Maybe I like it because it was my idea, but the values seemed about right to me, and the winner would usually seem to be the person who really excelled and had a big margin of victory in one of the 3 categories.

So based on the above, so far this month would be as follows:
HR RBI AVG.
DM 15 46 .431 or 431 + 375 + 460 = 1266
PL 15 33 .455 or 455 + 375 + 330 = 1160
DJ 13 44 .362 or 362 + 325 + 440 = 1127
JG 12 29 .293 or 293 + 300 + 290 = 883
I don't know about other months - I suppose we could go back and have a look - but these numbers seem right to me.
DM and I are tied in homers, but his lead of 13 RBIs is worth more than my lead of 24 points in BA - as it should be.
DJ has considerably more RBIs than I do, but my 2 extra homers and 93 point lead in average seem to offset that and give me just enough of a lead over him.
Plug in different numbers and differenent scenarios to my formula, and see what you think.
It's funny.....
If we were talking about an entire baseball
season, I'd say that a guy who hit .350 with 100 RBIs was a ton more valuable than a guy who hit .250 with 110 RBIs, and they'd be tied with my formula.
But for only one month, 1 RBI seems to be worth about 10 points of batting average.

Garret Anderson didn't start tonight's game. :p Of course, he'll probably come in for a pinch-hit walkoff grand slam... then again, that's not too likely since I have him in the salary cap game.
So I suppose what's gonna happen is Inge is gonna go 0/4, doubled to 0/8, just to fuck w/ my AVG even more...
