Rose Bowl

Rose Bowl - 01/02/06 01:08 PM

I think I've only watched 1 college football game completely (last year's title game, #1 USC vs #2 OU). Wednesday's will be my second as I'm rooting for #1 USC to destroy #2 UT. I also am probably going to watch my Figting Irish take it to Ohio State tonight. The game's scheduled for 4:30 EST. What's up with that? In any case, GO IRISH & GO TROJANS!

I've seen more college games than you? It's easily accessible to you. You should take advantage of it.

I can't believe Notre Dame got killed the way they did against Ohio State

Re: Rose Bowl - 01/03/06 04:03 AM

I'm not really a fan of college pigskin but since the two best teams in the U.S.A. are facing each other, hence making this a legitimate championship game, I'm following it a bit more than I normally would and plan to watch the game. I think that USC will win by two touch downs.
I still think that there should be a different rating system for University football teams and there should be a playoff tournament akin to March Madness in basketball. This way they could still include a lot of schools and there would only be one championship game. What are there now like 50 bowl games?! It doesn't make sense.

Tonight I'm leaving my tape running... No way am I risking this NOT going into overtime like the bloody Orange Bowl.

Re: Rose Bowl - 01/04/06 04:12 PM

I think it will be a good game, but it will fall short of all the hype that has occurred. I predict USC will win by 10 points, 31-21.

Anybody see the game (or highlights) of the bowl game before New Year's Day in which one team onside kicked two separate times and BOTH times the receiving team fielded the kick and RAN IT BACK for touchdowns? I've never seen that happen (although I'm sure it has), let alone twice in the same game. I may be wrong, but I also think it was the same player who returned both touchdowns.

We had a fantasy game in which you had to pick the winners of all the bowl games. Surprised none of you guys played.

MaryCas won. Here are tonight's predictions from our peerless prognosticators

MaryCas, USC 34-28
plawrence, USC 48-38
Scarface Tony Montana, USC 30-27
DonMichaelCorleone, USC 38-24
JustLou, USC 31-24
Spike716, USC (N/A)
Jimmy Buffer, USC 34-28
Don Andrew, USC 37-33

and

Whoever wins, it should be a good one. Of course, the BCS Championship game looks like it should be a good one every year.

Re: Rose Bowl - 01/05/06 05:17 AM

c'mon USC hold them to at most a field goal...

They better pull something out of their ass.

Re: Rose Bowl - 01/05/06 05:21 AM

Why would they go for a FG?

That would still leave them trailing, with not enough time left to get the ball back and score again.

Re: Rose Bowl - 01/05/06 05:26 AM

I watched bits and pieces of the game (I'm not a huge college football fan so this wasn't too high on my sports radar) and from what I saw I can safely say that Vince Young has a pretty good future in the NFL ahead of him.

Exciting finish to an exciting game, and a rarity: Something that lived up to its advance billing.

Congrats to the Longhorns.

Re: Rose Bowl - 01/05/06 12:59 PM

Just watched it, what a game. Though that final Young run will be remembered the most I thought the key play was that face mask call on the completed 3rd down but still behind the 1st down marker late in the 4th. Without it Texas would have needed a 4th down conversion to keep any hope alive. Because of the penalty they were awarded, the game continued with a new set of downs then Young performed his magic to win the game.

I didn't have to worry about my tape running out too.

Re: Rose Bowl - 01/05/06 01:10 PM

I don't root for either of the teams. It was an exciting game, but I think UT benefited greatly by the non-call when Texas was awarded their first TD when Young's knee was CLEARLY down as he lateralled. But I also fault USC for not calling time out to review it. USC had chances to put Texas away and Carroll made a really stupid call on 4th & 2 by going for it on Texas' 45 yd line. Why I say stupid is having Bush on the sideline for that play.

Re: Rose Bowl - 01/05/06 10:11 PM

Whenever I make a prediction, always bet on the opposing team. I pick USC to win the Rose Bowl and Texas wins. I've picked Miami to win the NBA Finals, watch them get beaten by Detroit in the Eastern Conference Final. I've picked Brazil to win the World Cup watch them get turfed in the 2nd round...

Good one, DA.

I was listening to Mike & Chris this afternoon (NYC sportstalk radio hosts), and one of the callers made an interesting point.

They suggested that after USC failed on their 4th quarter 4th & 2 attempt, they should have realized that whoever got the ball last in this game, if if they got it with a reasonable amount of time left vis a vis their field position, they would win.

So the suggestion was that USC should have let Texas score as quickly as possible, allowing them (USC) to have control of the ball and the clock at the end of the game, and march to the inevitable game-winning score, rather than let Texas do it.

Interesting idea. I remember something similar in a GB-Denver Super Bowl around 7-8 years ago.

Re: Rose Bowl - 01/06/06 05:04 AM

I actually watched this entire game, and it's the first football game I've watched completely since my school's season ended. Shows what an exciting game it was if it kept this baseball fan interested.

I, unfortunately, don't know much about football, but I had a great time watching this. Both teams have talent, obviously - though I was (naturally) rooting for Texas to begin with, I do believe they did "deserve" to win, and I know that all of the dedicated, true blue fans were happy to see their team win. So I think they deserved it, too. Good for them.

Anyway, this game certainly sparked my interest in football. And not just for the cute guys in tight uniforms.

Re: Rose Bowl - 01/06/06 05:52 AM

Even though I had picked USC to win I was rooting for Texas the whole time. I was sick & tired of all the hype that this years USC team was getting. Hell IMHO last years USC was better than this years team.

I was going for Texas as I tend to favor the Big 12 conference.

Reggie Bush made one of the biggest bone headed moves I've ever seen in College Football. Note to Reggie-"before you go to lateral the ball make sure your teammate is expecting it."

I do that all the time when I'm playing Madden.

Re: Rose Bowl - 01/06/06 03:33 PM

It could get ridiculous, though.

Because what happens if Texas thinks the same thing: Whoever has the ball last, given reasonable field position and enough time on the clock, will win.

So they go and let USC score on one play.

Now Texas gets the ball, and USC does the same thing......

You know this is the first thing I was thinking of last night when watching a Superbowl edition from NFL films. It'd be '98, Denver against Green Bay, and in the program they revealed that Denver's last touchdown was scored so easily due to Holmgren wanting the ball back giving Favre time to score and take the game into OT. Obviously it never happened and Elway finally got his ring.

The case is different but the principle is the same. The risk is high.
