2005 Pigskin Pick'em (2 games)

Posted By: J Geoff

2005 Pigskin Pick'em (2 games) - 08/25/05 05:44 PM

Make your weekly NFL picks, against-the-spread and/or straight-up.

http://games.espn.go.com/pigskin/frontpage

Picks lock at the first game on Sunday.
Games before Sunday lock at game time.

First game: Thursday, Sep 8

Note: Apparently we can create up to 3 entries per person this year. I have created TWO groups, one for against-the-spread, and one for straight-up. Join either or both.

Against-the-Spread

group: Gangster BB
passw: Corleone

Straight Up

group: Gangster BB 2
passw: Corleone

Please do not have more than one entry in each group, or move entries around after we've started. I don't know why they allow 3 entries this year - sounds stupid - so please do not cheat by swapping a better (3rd) team into our group after we've begun playing.

I kept the groups unlocked so people can join after the first week if they wanted to - NOT so people can swap in better teams.

Note: Donovan McNabb's mom, Mrs. McNabb, is playing game-wide. Think we can crush her? \:D

If anyone tries to switch teams, we'll know it soon enough anyway since we post the standings every week.

Well. I tried getting in and picking my teams, after I logged in at the top, where it says to log in. But, it always brings me back to the same page it started out with like I'm not logged in, so I have no idea what to do.

Try clearing your browser cache (temporary internet files) and log in again... that fixed it for me when that happened a couple weeks ago...

Are you using Mozilla or Netscape? I have the same problem. Sometimes it works, most times it won't, so I just us IE for the ESPN games. I've tried clearing cache, etc, but the problem always returns.

Re: 2005 Pigskin Pick'em (2 games) - 08/26/05 06:04 AM

Funny, I only use Firefox for the ESPN games -- mostly since it had a built-in pop-up blocker before IE did. And more importantly, it has tabbed browsing so I can have 10 sites open at once in the same window.

I only use IE for the BB cuz Firefox sucks at forms for some reason. (Umm, word-wrap anyone? Hello??)

Re: 2005 Pigskin Pick'em (2 games) - 08/26/05 06:08 AM

I'm using the latest build of Mozilla (1.7.11) which is similar to Firefox 1.06. The only site I have a problem is ESPN. It's like it doesn't recognize the log-in, and returns to the log-in page.

Re: 2005 Pigskin Pick'em (2 games) - 08/26/05 06:22 AM

Well, I'm using Firefox 1.0.6, and had that problem once - a couple weeks ago - and they told me to try clearing my cache, and that worked. Don't know what else to say; besides, I'm 10000000% happier having tabbed browsing than having freakin' nightmare IE... :p

Re: 2005 Pigskin Pick'em (2 games) - 08/26/05 07:12 AM

I hate IE. The only thing I use it for is the ESPN games, and the rare site that doesn't work with Mozilla. ...I just tried clearing the cache. No good. I even tried logging onto ESPN via their main page, and it doesn't work. It just doesn't recognize my password.

Okay, now where should I go once I get into the Insider Index page? Because this is where it kept getting screwed up last time, and I have no clue what to do.

Re: 2005 Pigskin Pick'em (2 games) - 08/28/05 11:12 AM

Are you here, Danny?

http://games.espn.go.com/pigskin/frontpage

If so, you need to register for an ESPN member name and password.

If you already have one, you should be able to log-in in the upper right hand corner.

If you don't see the log-in form, try clicking on one of the tabs (like "leaderboard" or "message board"), and that should do it.

I'm actually shocked at how difficult it's been for me to pick ATS. It's not a system generally used in UK gambling so I've had to learn it through, initially, Henry Hill's Wiseguy and then I had a little refresher when I signed up for this game. Hopefully my game will pick up soon.

Re: 2005 Pigskin Pick'em (2 games) - 09/29/05 01:03 PM

How do they do it in the UK, Turi?

Straight up, with odds only?
Posted By: Turi Giuliano

Re: 2005 Pigskin Pick'em (2 games) - 09/29/05 01:30 PM

Yeah it's mostly odds. With soccer being our main sport there's little or no room for spread betting - scores are too low. I guess it could work for rugby but as far as I know they're just regular odds still. A favoured way of betting on a soccer game here is by choosing a winner and first goal scorer with the odds accumulated.

Or another favoured betting method, like our straight up game, pick winners and their odds are accumulated. Pick up an accumulater sheet from your bookies (it'll have all the league games, maybe 40 approx) and you can choose as little or many winners as you like. I assume you can do that in the US too with the NFL?

Re: 2005 Pigskin Pick'em (2 games) - 10/01/05 05:37 PM

Okay, besides the first week, I haven't made any picks, and I'm just giving up now that i missed two weeks. I haven't had too much time (homework) and also my computer's internet has been messing up on a regular basis everytime I get on a website, so it was kind of complicated to make any picks so I just said screw it.

Re: 2005 Pigskin Pick'em (2 games) - 10/06/05 01:13 PM

I've just looked at the upcoming games and is going to be a make or break week for us all. This week looks to be the hardest so far this season for simply picking winners. If I see scores of over 9 for ATS and over 10 for SU I'll put it down to luck.

It's a sad day in the DMC household

Re: 2005 Pigskin Pick'em (2 games) - 10/10/05 10:08 AM

I don't think you were the only one DMC. Marycas must have forgot to also - unless he failed to get any correct ATS picks which is a bit unlikely. No one could have chose SF over Indy.

DMC, if it were up to me those that accidently miss weeks should get an average of their scores performance. I'd give you 6 points for this missed week based on a mean of 9, 3, 6 and 4. And 9 for MC. And, is it Don Andrew? (Let's go Fins and Skin'), 6 for his week 4 performance he missed.

Only 2 points behind you in the standings. And I joined the 3rd week of the season.

Straight up I've got 8 picks right and not 7 which is what ESPN are showing.

MC, again if it were up to me I'd give you an average based on either your past weekly performances or on the groups week 7 average.

Thank you DB for acknowledging my good week - I need to close the gap - ewww that would sound nasty if you were a 'chick'. Anyway .... I wouldn't expect anything from PL - he is disappointing me with his play in the fantasy football league so far. He is losing - losing to 'chicks' also.

And he can't complain of a 5 day draft this time either ... :p Or that the system auto picked 2 QBS like last year. It seems left alone he did this himself. Personally I believe he needs a co-owner, with all the sports he is involved with. Not too late to turn the season around, I have faith in him. I would volunteer but I'm busy ... So I was thinking he should get a 'chick' to be co-owner. Buffy is one that comes to mind, but I know she is in some leagues already with her peeps. Gina is another but she is too absorbed watching her boys in the World Series, so that leaves Lezbo. PL and her will make a good team - if they can't get wins they will at least be grammatically correct in their choices and if all goes bad, she can take him out shopping.

And speaking of the other league - as Commish, I believe you need to step in and start kicking some ass over there. These teams can't take two minutes to at least start a line up. Pork should suspend anyone from the board for 2 weeks if they don't submit a lineup at least of players who are playing - I believe that is fair.

Hope everyone is 'behaving' I know some are not though .... but I won't name names ... :p

Re: 2005 Pigskin Pick'em (2 games) - 11/08/05 01:37 PM

This was a GREAT football weekend for me! And I'm not talking Pigskin Pick'em either.

A few more football weekends like this one, and dinner & drinks at the gangsterbb weekend next year will be on me.

Not for nothing, but DMC seems to be fading fast in all of the leagues that he is in with me. NFL.com, Fantasy Hockey, Pigskin Pick'em.

I think his brains gone sour from all that comedy he's playing with that young girl.

There are perfectly good explinations for everything:

Fantasy Hockey: My players are not performing.

NFL: T.O., Boldin, Dominick Davis on the bench. T.O. on short notice

This Game: I suck at picking winners

No Uber Points (whatever they are) of course, but I think we should play that next year instead.

Re: 2005 Pigskin Pick'em (2 games) - 11/17/05 05:50 PM

This game is tough enough - and is the standard way to make weekly picks if you were to do it "for real", so I like this one...
Posted By: Turi Giuliano

Re: 2005 Pigskin Pick'em (2 games) - 11/18/05 10:31 AM

But wouldn't the confidence points be like putting your money where your mouth is adding that kind of realism to it?

I like the sound of it. I'm up for new things but I still like this game too.

Well, if you're in a real pool for money, then yeah, altho the one that I'm in has an extra pick each week for a "Best Bet", in effect doubling the value of that one game.

But if you're betting for real on individual games, no one bets every game on the card, and the games that they do bet are often for varying amounts.

I'll retract the "instead" in my post above. No reason why we can't paly them both next year.....

He does his share of gloating, MC (admittedly no more than I do, though). Read a few of the other fantasy threads.

Re: 2005 Pigskin Pick'em (2 games) - 11/22/05 02:59 PM

I was putting up a good fight in the College Football Pick 'Em game, until JG misinformed us about the game ending last week and I made a few weird picks, hoping to get lucky and catch up.

And I am beating you in the Thursday Night game. Despite your protestations that a game featuring all proposition bets is mostly a matter of luck, I think that my record of consistency throughout the season shows that a little research can go a long way and remove a good part of the luck factor.

Let's see now.....I'm also putting up a decent fight in the Football Salary Cap game. Yes, you're in the lead, but I'm second, and with six weeks to go, that one is by no means over yet.

I'm not gonna mention hockey, since I freely admit that I know almost nothing about the players. So AFAIC, that one doesn't even count for me.

Then there's Yahoo Basketball. I'm doing pretty well in that one, but wait......you're not in it. :p

Nor are you in the weekly NBA Pick 'Em game, or the NBA Rookie game.

In fact, the only game I can think of in which you are kicking my ass in is Salary Cap Basketball, and that's strictly because of a fluke. Wait until the second half.

So, you were saying......?

Re: 2005 Pigskin Pick'em (2 games) - 11/22/05 03:56 PM

I'm not even counting the "pick-em games" which I'm winning. Those aren't real fantasy games. I'm only counting the Salary Cap Games where I've won or winning every single one I've played. Baseball, basketball, football, golf, and Yahoo hockey.

It let you pick the NE TB game at 1:35?

They probably didn't even kick off yet at 1:35 :p
Knowing ESPN, you probably can still make or change it.

I'm just glad I figured out what MC meant by "whew!"

Dammit! After hitting all home teams (S/U) and underdogs (ATS) at like 1:32 to be sure I got any picks in, apparently I forgot to change my ATS pick to New England during my second pass.

I can't believe a Limey gets the most correct! Hey Turi, do they still use that term?

Re: 2005 Pigskin Pick'em (2 games) - 12/27/05 12:44 PM

Of course we do 'most correct' is an English term too. Only joking it's only you guys that call us limey's

Re: 2005 Pigskin Pick'em (2 games) - 12/27/05 01:21 PM

Marycas, you know if you didn't have three missed weeks, based on an average of your scores you would have been in the thick of it competing with me Plaw and JG for third at least. And that's with your last pick of 3 bringing your average down. Cardi's another if he didn't miss the first two weeks and week 16 he'd be a competitor too.

With all the last minute running around for the holiday, I totally forgot to put my picks in this past week.

Well done DB and Just Lou. Joint winners for the spread game (Lou you must be gutted but DB's strong last week performance) and well done DB for comfortably winning the straight up game.

Re: 2005 Pigskin Pick'em (2 games) - 01/02/06 04:02 PM

SHIT. I accidently overwrote Week 16 with Week 17.

WEEK 17 - SEASON FINALE

Against the Spread
Code:

   WK17 TOT

DB 10 140 Strong finish to tie for 1st
JL 7 140 Couldn't hold on, but still MOAAFS
PL 9 130 Beat the Brit at least
TU 5 128 Almost had 3rd
JG 5 126 Beat the chick at least
MA 8 125 All those Philly picks costly?
DM 8 115 Beaten by a chick lol
DC 8 113 Almost beat DMC even missing 3 weeks
MC 10 109 Also had 3 DNP weeks
JB - 104 Had 2 DNP weeks
SP - 102 Was wise not to talk trash :P

Straight-Up

Code:

   WK17 TOT

DB 10 182 Another 1st Place Pick'em finish
BD 9 171 Maybe next year, Wuss
PL 13 168 Moves from 5th to 3rd
JG 9 167 :(
TU 10 166 Did all right this year
MA 9 162 Chunky Chili Time
SP - 153 Blew chunks
DM 9 151 Out of gutter at least
JB - 146 Only 36 picks out of 1st

Congrats, Douche!

And Lou, I guess. Too bad he wussed out and only played one game. It would've been easier to declare one overall winner. :p

Whadya mean I did alright this year? This was my first year playing. I can't wait till next year now I think I can be better.

I can't manage the cap for shit but I'm ok at picking winners and working the spread.

Re: 2005 Pigskin Pick'em (2 games) - 01/02/06 05:44 PM

Nice going, DB and MOAAFS. Congrats.

Just as a basis for comparison, it might interest you guys to know that I've been in one of these games for money - $10 a week, about 100 people, $250 weekly prize, $2000 for first place for the season, $1500 for second, etc. - for about 20 years.

I won it twice, finished second once, and had maybe 4-5 other "in the money" finishes.

Anyway, this year's winner had 158.

They guy who finished 15th, the last money spot (except for the bottom 5, who also get something) won $150 with 146 wins.

To put it in another perspective, if you were betting real money and laying the typical 11-10 on every game, you would have had a W-L record of 140-116.

That would translate to a net win of 124 units (140 x 10 for the games you won, minus 124 x 11 for the games you lost).

To break even, you need a winning percentage of .524 (you need to win 11 out of 21).

Your winning percentage was a profitable .547

In other words, if you were betting $1 a game, you would have won $12.40 for the season, at $10 a game you would have won $124, $20 a game would have won you $248, etc.

I know JL is familiar with all of this..... :p

Re: 2005 Pigskin Pick'em (2 games) - 01/03/06 01:20 PM

So let's see. I played 14 out of 17 weeks and got 109 pts. for an average of just over 7 points per week. Add 21 to my score and I tied plaw for second, but rounding up, one of those weeks would have been an 8, so I took second place. Cool.
