ON TRIAL - Sports "Curses"

ON TRIAL - Sports "Curses" - 10/13/04 02:58 PM

As the Red Sox from the bean-eating town of Boston lost to the New York Yankees last night in the first Game of the ALCS, an ever-present entity roams the consiousness of all Red Sox fans...the "Curse of the Bambino", and of course the "Billy Goat Curse" inflicting all those Cubs fans already getting ready for next season and/or drunk.

ON TRIAL here is....is there really a curse on two professional sports squads?

Me, I think its just a silly psychological deterrent built-up from many years of losing and disapointments and so on, combined with the self-pitty and folklore created by these fans.

A prime example why I think curses in sports are s*it is this....the so-called curse that plagued the New York Rangers of the NHL for many decades before they finally won the Stanley Cup in 1994.

Neverless sports fans, post your thoughts on the manner, and I'll post another ON TRIAL thread soon....concerning a certain "Empire"...

Of course there is a curse of the Bambino. You can watch it at work this week.

Do I believe in the curse? ABSOLUTELY! Just take game 7 of the ALCS last year. Not to mention the fact that Boston hasn't won a World Series in 86 years. Plus the fact that they almost won the Series against the Mets back in '86 but because of a ground ball, didn't. You can't look at these signs & just say it's misfortune. It's more than that.

There's a talk-host in Cleveland who says that "God hates Cleveland" because of all the misfortunes its sports teams have suffered. That's a bit much, IMO, but we are as cursed as a sports town can get: 1) 1997 World Series - Indians are the 1st team to ever blow a 9th inning lead in the decisive game and lose. Thankfully, it also happened to NY in 2001, 2) Browns teams of 1980, '86, '87, 3) Cavs losing to Jordan in 1988 and then losing Boozer to a bone-headed management gaffe.

All due respect to Red Sox fan, Cubs fan, and Philadelphia fans. You don't have a thing on us - we're at 40 years without a title. The Sox have the Pats & Celtics from the past 20 years, the Cubs have had the Bulls & Bears, and Philly had the Sixers & (I think) the Flyers.

The 1997 Series went 7 games? Wow, I don't remember that. All I do remember is that Florida won and that Cleveland beat New York that year. Man I HATED Cleveland that year!

There is no curse! What if the Red Sox win? Babe Ruth must've decided to drop the curse, right? :p

At least the Buffalo Braves were a pretty good basketball team.

The only "good" team we have in Buffalo is our AAA baseball club, the Bisons, which I love (they are the Indians farm club btw, and many stars have gone through there...David Justice, Milton Bradley, Brian Giles, et al (I remember Jeter was here breifly as well ). They won the "Governors Cup" again this year, which they seem to win frequently.
