FANTASY BASKETBALL POST SEASON GAME NOW OPEN!! - 04/15/04 11:51 AM
As you readers of the Sports Forum know, a few of us have been playing a Fantasy Basketball Game throughout the regular season.
A new game for the post season is about to start, probably tomorrow when the playoff schedule is announced.
It's a game that you have to be involved in every day for the length of the playoffs, so we're talking about approximately two months.
Every day you pick a roster (point guard, shooting guard, power forward, small forward, center, and coach) from among those players and coaches who are playing on that particular day.
You get fantasy points for points scored, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks, and lose points for missed field goal attempts, missed free throws, and turnovers.
Every player is assigned a salary cap value, and the total value for your team can't go over 100. Since the best players all have values much greater than 20, you can't just pick only the best players. Like if you take Garnett & Duncan, for example, you're going to wind up weaker at the other positions.
Anyway, if you're interested in playing, watch this thread tomorrow. As soon the playoff schedule is announced the game will open and I'll post the link and instructions on how to join.

The format is exactly the same as the baseball game, but it's sponsored by the NBA.
I sleep. Usually from about 11 or 12 or 1 until 5 or 6 or so, but sometimes less.

That's not bad, that's usually when I sleep too. It's just when I wake up in the morning I see that you've already posted during the night & it just seems that you never get any sleep.

The postseason is another segment of the VGM game we've been playing...
Tho, of course, new people can join NOW and be in for the entire postseason segment.

I don't think it is, cuz it asked me to log-in with my "NBA.com Member Name", and my ESPN info didn't work.
If I were to play Pick 'n Roll, I'd have to register on NBA.com
VGM is a totally separate game.

If you played the second half of the regular season game (DB, JG, SP, TM, PP) you're already registered.
For newbies, here's the link:

CORLEONE Remember....You are picking a team for Saturday's games. If no opponent is listed next to a player's name, that means that player is not playing that day.
Be sure to pick only players who are playing on the day for which you are selecting a team, otherwise you get no points for that player. The deadline for picking your team is 3:00 AM Eastern time on the day of the game.
Don't forget:
Review your roster every day, and make whatever changes are necessary to be sure that you have a team of players that are all playing that day.

yeah you're right. I joined this pick'n'roll game and it was already logged in so I didn't even think if it was my espn.com or nba.com account and went out saying it was the same

FROM THE DESK OF THE COMMISSIONER....Here we are with the start of the first game less than 8 hours away, and the site is still all fucked up
As you can see, they are showing the players from whom we picked today's rosters as playing Monday, April 19th. I fugured they just had the dates wrong, and the rosters would lock at 3:00 AM this morning and show Sunday's roster choices for Tuesday April 20th.
However, although it is past 3:00 AM Eastern, seemingly you can still change your roster for today -- assuming that the players we pick even count for today.
Also, it raises the question of when you can pick your team for tomorrow
Here's what I say (in the event they don't have this thing fixed by 2:00 PM):
We have two choices. We can either
a) Go along with however the thing gets straightened out by site. Which, of course, I don't like. or
b) Go by our transaction logs like we did for February 29th.
If we go with "b", then this is what I think:
Any roster changes made after 2:00 PM Eastern
today will be assumed to be changes you are making for Sunday.
Any player who does not have an opponent listed next to his name is playing Sunday.
This is really much simpler than it sounds. Assuming everything does not get fixed, the key thing to remember is
Do not pick your team for Sunday until after 2:00 PM Eastern time today. Then, only pick from players with no opponent listed next to them.
Then get ready with those transaction logs
I'd say we could all post our teams for today before 2:00 PM, but what happens if someone doesn't read this before then?

Maybe they're at work fixing the problem. I see that they are now listing the players for tomorrow with tomorrow's opponents, so disregard what I said above about picking your team for tomorrow by picking players with no opponent listed next to them.
Anyway, for tomorrow (Sunday), just in case...

That's my point: It's just starting.
The onlt time it helps to know the other guy's picks is if you're chasing the leader and you want to be sure to pick a different team or if you are the leader and you want to try to pick the same team as the guy who is chasing you.

But, thankfully, everything seems to be OK now
Unfortunately, though, PP and OA, who had the highest scores yesterday failed to pick a new team today
I dunno...maybe we should throw out the first two days, and, assuming that PP and OA pick teams for Monday, only use the scores from yesterday and today to determine the standings among the four of us.
In other words, DB would have 2 points added to his score when the game is over, JG +3, and SP +4, plus or minus whatever the differnces in our scores are for today.
Those points couldn't be "used" to pass any other players, just us four.
I don't know if I explained that very well, but lemme know what you think JG & DB. If you think it's a good idea, I'll PM and email PP and OA and tell them not to lose heart. But if they don't pick a new team for Monday, I say too bad and we'll just let the scores stand as they are.
Man, I never realized how much work there was in being a commissioner. First Feb 29, now this....

Aren't you the one who insisted on manually overriding that one day that the system screwed up and they decided not to count? Well, I'd rather not do that again (well, the opposite of that). Everyone had a chance to set their rosters like everyone else...

If we only use Sat & Sun scores to determine the standings among the four of us who played both days, it doesn't make any difference if we add in the total scores, or a +/-.
As far as anyone else missing a day during the course of the game, too bad. This is a special situation because the site was so screwed up.
As far as OA and PP and their excuses go, we could also just say "screw 'em". Obviously, they didn't read this thread to find out what was going on.
Now that I've said that, I'm thinking maybe we should just forget the whole idea of trying to help them. I'm just trying to be fair and make a better, more competitive game with more players, but if they didn't take the time to read this thread, TS.
Let's see what DB thinks.

I say we should just follow what ESPN standings. If there is a huge outcry from players for those first two days -ESPN will make the official ruling about what to do.

Thanks for posting the standings First Assistant Commissioner JG. When I left at 8:30 this morning, they still weren't officially posted on the site and I wasn't around a computer all day.
As far as the first two days go, we STILL haven't heard from any of these guys.
My ruling is screw 'em, unless, as Second Assistant Commissioner DB says, ESPN rules otherwise.

Man, a 20 point lead or so in this game is gonna be like gold. There won't be any days when someone can make up 30-40 points in one shot, especially as teams get eliminated. It seems like every day you can pick the guys with the highest VAvg and still be waaaay under the cap.

I may have spoken too soon. There are plenty of interesting possibilities for tomorrow, and with a lot of potential high scorers playing (and the chance that one or two of them will do really poorly), we could have some big swings. When we get to the final four and the fnal two, though, and it's one game a night....

I'm not sure who made the conservative pick last night. If you check their V.Avg. since Daniels started playing 40 minutes a game, I'd bet it's been higher than Bibby's.

let me make this a help forum: are you getting to see the box scores? I couldn't see the box from today's Heat-Hornets game and the whole nba.com is crazy on my pc. the main picture in the home page don't show up, not even the daily leaders or the in-progress games. is the site crazy or the problem is me? because in the Gangster BB site, I'm finding some troubles too (the avatars don't show up), but not in other web pages. as this is driving me nuts I'd like to know if this is happening with you too

I was perusing the public message board on the game site to see what other players had to say about the Minn-Sac screw up, and found a post in which someone (obviously more dedicated than even we are) pointed out the reason why some players are listed in duplicate.
He said that those who were listed twice were guys whose team originally had a first round game scheduled for tonight had their respective series gone that long.
Sure enough, when I checked my roster for tonight it showed Bibby & Christie each vs. Minn and Dallas, and KG vs. Denver and Sac.
I also looked at the leaderboard, and altho I only checked out a few rosters, I did find a couple who picked only NO-Mia players tonight.
I don't know if the problem of not showing all the players who are in action on a particular night is gonna get fixed or not, but since everyone should now be aware of the problem, I say let everyone be on their own going forward in making sure that they know who's playing on a given night and making their picks accordingly.
Kind of like doubleheaders.

No real strategy into it Plaw (which proved to be my downfall last night). You remember that I didn't find out about the Minn-Sac game until late. I just went first with my two biggest weak spots - replacing Caron Butler and whoever I had a PF (I think it was P.J. Brown). Once that I saw that I could fit KG and C-Webb in there nicely without going over 100, I didn't even look at changing the other spots (and in the process, forgetting Bibby was available).

Speaking of Dwayne Wade, here's a guy that, I think, gets it. I see him as a lesser talented Ray Allen, but I think he'll be a good pro for years. He seems to be able to turn it on during the important games - last year, it was with Marquette; this year, it's in the NBA playoffs.

Watching the NBA playoffs is enjoyable. This is the first time all year (other than going to live Bulls games, of course) that I actually sat down to watch an NBA basketball game. Usually, Kobe is very smooth with his moves. Last night, he was so herky-jerky.

As much as I love the Nets, I figured Detroit was gonna knock 'em out this year. Believe me, I couldn't care less about the fantasy game. But at least there was a teeny-tiny bit of solace in the loss.

Interesting strategy, JG, going without a PF.
I considered doing that myself, but decided that
1) Cassell is not 100% physically
2) The PG position is usually the second-most unpredictable, but with the matchups in this series it's probably the most unpredictable.
3) Madsen averaged about 5 fantasy points a game in the Sac series. He had 13 rebounds one game
4) He may see more time, depending on how generous the refs are to Shaq with the foul calls.

Looking at both these series, it's gonna be very tough for anyone to make up any ground.
Besides the coach, the Det-Ind series presents only one real option: O'Neal or Wallace?
Unlike LA-Minn, everyone you could possibly want fits under the cap.

I was looking at the leaderboard.
Most people went with the Payton-Madsen combo, but quite a few used Sprewell & Malone with Cassell, Shaq & Kobe, and sacrificed KG.
I only looked at the top 15 or so and nobody had the JG solution, but one guy went without a coach.

I didn't like his team at all
Cassell, Kobe, Garnett, Shaq, and Gary Trent, with Lawrence Frank (3.1) as coach.
So he basically traded to get the expected gain of Casell over Payton, for, let's say, the 50/50 chance of 5 points for a coach and, considering that Trent doesn't even play, an almost definite loss of a few points in not having Madsen.
Like I said, the PG position is too unpredictable here to sacrifice much to have Cassell over Payton.
Another combo that cam up a few times was Hoiberg and Malone instead of Kobe and whoever.

I wouldn't say Trent is a
definite zero.
Maybe the guy figures it's Minny in a rout, Cassell runs amok, Payton does nothing, and Trent picks up a few points during garbage time.
Of course, now that we're in the "One-Game-A-Day-Everyone-Picks-The-Same-Players-So-It's-Almost-Impossible-To-Gain-Ground" phase of the game, that's the kind of figuring you'll be doing soon.

BTW, was your foray into unpredictability last night a result of the honest feeling that Miller would outscore Hamilton, or did you pick him thinking that he had a chance to outscore Hamilton?
I looked at the possibilities for the finals, and then constructed a team for each scenario based on their being one game a night.
There are only a few scenarios out of the four possible matchups where, in my opinion, except for the coach, you could have a legitimate argument for picking either player. Every other pick for that night will be fairly obvious.
So what that probably means is that the finals will become a bit if a psychological battle with me playing defense, and depending on the size of my lead, at some point you will have to take a Tinsley over a Billups and cross your fingers and hope for the best. Based on the matchups, and the fact that we may have as few as 10 and as many as only 17 opportunities left, and it's impossible for anyone to know how exactly how many there actually will be, that point may be sooner rather than later.
Of course, that doesn't take into account JG breathing down your neck for third, and how much protecting second place means to you.

Holy crap, JG is only 14 points behind me.
Wow, I should really pay more attention.
Anyway, I chose Miller because I honestly thought that he would outscore Rip. It's probably his last year - I would think that he would want to go out with a bang.
The trouble with Miller is that his looks are deceiving - he doesn't look noticeably older than when he was a superstar. But man, has his skills deteriorated...
I haven't thought about it long enough to decide my strategy yet. As of right now, I'm still playing straight up. I do know that being in 2nd or 3rd doesn't mean all that much to me - both mean I wasn't in 1st.
Friggin' competitive side in me...

Have you looked at the potential match-ups for the finals yet?
Here...I'll save you the time and trouble. This is strictly my opinion of course, but the only arguable choices are as follows:
Minn vs Det: Cassell or Billups
Minn vs Indy: Miller or Szerbiack or Hoiberg
LA vs. Det: Billups or Payton, Rasheed or Malone
LA vs Indy: O'Neal vs. O'Neal
Any really unpredictable picks that you might have to make (Like say Tinsley vs. Cassell, or Prince vs. Fox), could, of course, come through but you would be a decided underdog.
Fortunately for you, I think, The LA/Det matchup with two choices seems to be the most likely. Then, as I said before, if I'm still in the lead it will become a pyschological battle, with me on defense trying to match your picks.
And if we hit the finals with only 4-7 possible opportunities left, even if I guess wrong, it's gonna be tough for you to make up 50 or so points.

From DB's POV, I can sort of understand...Trying to hold off JG for second place.
But JG, your conservatism mystifies me. Third place is locked up, so what to you have to lose by picking outside the box?
In your position I would have taken Payton and Rash-weed, and maybe Hamilton.
Or were you figuring that DB was gonna go outside the box in a run for first, and you could gain ground on him?

I think the "smaht" pick still has to be Kobe, at least statistically speaking, so I don't think you could expect me to pick Hamilton.
I figure I got the edge with Kobe and you guys are chasing me, so why would I switch?

Well, it was a stupid game. And I do remember, DB, you saying that you didn't want to play
Only the first two rounds were interesting. As soon as they moved into the conference finals and championship round with the one-game-a-night format, it was pretty boring. To gain 5 or 6 points a night was a major victory.
Except for JG last night, of course. He
did play it perfectly, having the advantage of having absolutely nothing to lose.
And, of course, thanks for the congrats DB, still My Most Worthy Adversary. Even though you finished third in the playoff hunt, it
was you who was chasing me the entire way, so it was you that I was constantly looking over my shoulder for. By the time I would have had to worry about JG, the game was over.
And a special mention to SP and TM. I'm proud of both of you kids. You didn't "Wuss Out" and stop playing like some (well one, anyway) of our other fantasy players. You stayed the course for the entire regular season and playoff run, and you both would have done much better had you each not missed so many damn days. Tell your parents or something that fantasy sports is just as important as homework because picking a team every day builds discipline and character.

The "TOT" column is our combined first and second half totals. It doesn't include the playoffs, scores for which are listed in the column labeled "Post".
