Guys like Pierce, Iverson and Francis are starting to lose my confidence so that's why I'm going with ones that have been the most consistent. I guess that makes it more interesting, cuz you just can't always pick the stars. But my question is why is Ronald Murray value still low? He's way down on the SG list and he's one of the reasons why the Sonics are playing well.

look how low the values are for Zach Randolph and Quentin Richardso, just to name two more.

I think when ESPN established the initial values, they way underestimated what these guys production would be. I haven' paid close attention, but certainly they've been rising in value every week. It just seems as thought they don't want to raise a guy more than .4 in any one week.

When the new game starts for the second half after the All-Star break, I think the guys we mentioned, along with many others, will show a truer reflection of their values.

BGT, like plaw said, those players' starting values were based on ESPN's belief of what they were going to do- either just hunches on their part (if the players are rookies) or based on last year's statistics. If Randolph or the others keep doing well, their PVR will keep going up. Conversely, slumping players will have their PVR go down.

I'm really doing poorly in my yahoo basketball leagues. Just haven't focused enough on those. Between this and football, my fantasy sports time is stretched thin. Much like plaw, I am also striving for a real life!

Figure this out...

I just happened to notice that the V. AVGs which I posted yesterday morning for the games played last night, are now different.

If you click on any player in our league, and look at his "previous" day (in this case Wednesday), his total V. Avg doesn't match what it was on Wednesday morning

I haven't noticed; Do they change player values daily in this game? That would account for the discrepency.

I noticed that once before also, plaw. There was one instance where I had a few players playing on consecutive days but the PVR changed the second day and I renegotiated the value (and it was midweek). I just thought it was a glitch.

In any case, since our rosters are different daily, it doesn't really affect us since we're always picking at the hypothetically higher values (if the value changes are daily).

I would think that the V.AVG should change daily (the day after a particular player plays the night before)... but the player values should only change weekly.

Once I thought I noticed a player's value changing in mid-week but thought I was seeing things since I only noticed it once. I don't know...

Duh. Of course, you're right JG. The V. Avg should change after a player plays. For some reason I was thinking "cap value".

Ha... You would think that a person with a statistics major (me) would have caught that...

In any case, I stand by my earlier comment- I once renegotiated values midweek (even after renegotiating the values on the Monday before).

Well, let's see... One over the number of players available at each position (including coach), to the fifth power.

In other words, there are 2 games tonight. Four teams involved. Four "feasible" picks (No one's gonna pick the scrubs) for each position.

You pick "Player A". SP has a 1/4 chance of also picking "Player A". So the chances of both of you picking "Player A" is 1/4.

Now do that 5 more times for the other four positions and coach, and you get 1/4 to the 5th power, or 1/4096, or, expressed in odds, 4095-1, or, as a percentage, 0.0002441.

That number, 4096, is also the number of ways a 6 man roster can be arranged if there are 4 choices at each position, but because of salary cap restrictions, there are any number of the 4096 combinations which have to be excluded.

For exanple, tonight picking McGrady, Duncan, Marbury, Nowitzki, and any center I believe, would put you over the cap.

The answer is "I don't know". Less than 4096 to 1, though.

You are absolutely correct that the chances of Bethie picking a 6 member team out of 4 teams playing is 1 out of 4096 (4 to the sixth power) As you mentioned, the probability is probably less by virtue of player value restrictions- you might have only 2 or 3 of the 4 players available to you once you chose a high value player at another position).

However, we are talking about the probability of two people having the same team. That means whatever probability that Bethie has in picking her team, SP has the same probability (up to a max of 1 out of 4096).

Therefore, the probability of both having the same exact team is 1 out of 16,777,216 (4096*4096).

It's much like two people flipping coins. Both have a 1 out of 2 chance of getting heads or tails. There is a 1 out of 4 chance of both getting heads, both getting tails, one getting heads while the other tails (and vice versa).

Plaw... I've reread your answer and the more I think about it, you answered it correctly depending on how the question is phrased...

If the question is asked:

What is the probability that two players have the same team?

The answer is my answer: 1 out of 16,777,216.

If the question is asked:

What is the probability that SP chooses the same team as Bethie given Bethie's team is already picked?

Then the answer is your answer: 1 out of 4096.

Believe it or not, DB, I pondered the question some more on the ride home tonight. (and, of course, thinking coin-flipping analogies as Idrove).

At first, I thought I was incorrect, and the odds were 4096 x 4096. But then I figured, if there are 4096 ways to arrange the team, and CC arranged it one way, whoever else had a 1/4096 chance of arranging it the same way.

But I'm not sure your answer is ever the correct one.

If CC chooses heads first, then the chances of SP choosing heads is 1/2. But not knowing if Beth took heads or tails, i.e. if they "flip" simultaneously, then SP still has a 1/2 chance of matching (H-H or T-T), or not matching (T-H, H-T).

I know there's a scenario where 4096 x 4096 is the correct answer, I just don't know what it is.

For that to be the correct answer, you need three people involved. I pick a roster. The odds of CC picking the same roster is 1 x 4096. The odds of SP picking the same roster as the two of us is 1 x 4096 x 4096.

The way to phrase the question so it involves only two people would be something like this, I think:

What are the odds of two people picking the same predetermined roster? Or to put it another way, what are the odds of two players picking a roster composed of players A, B, C, D, E, and F, as opposed to any six random players?

But here's something else we didn't factor in which greatly reduces the odds: The number of players in our group.

In a group of two, the odds are 4096-1. In a group of eight, however, the odds are much lower. I mean in a group of 3000-4000, the odds of two people picking the same random roster are actually very low, because in a group of 4097, it would be an absolute certainty that at least two people would have the same picks.

So what do you do? Divide the 4096 by the size of the group?

Good points plaw. As I thought about it, your points below are what you've said before, but just put in another way. Let me explain...

This was exactly your point before... Given Bethie's team (which we can set in stone), SP has a 1 out of 4096 chance of matching it. The key is that we already know what Bethie picked a team.

This too is also the same point. We know that Bethie picked one of the 4 power forwards. Knowing that she picked one, someone else has a 1 in 4 chance of picking the same one. However, there's a slight difference in asking about the probability that Tim Duncan is picked. Bethie has a 1 in 4 chance. So does another person. Together, they have a 1 in 16 chance of both picking Tim Duncan.

As for your above example, you're right that there is a 1 in 2 chance that they match. There is also 1 in 4 chance that they both have heads.

Maybe here's a way to clarify the question:

What are the odds of two players picking the same point guard, the same shooting guard,..., and the same coach? 1 in 4096

What are the odds of two players both picking Tyronne Lue, T-Mac,..., and Frank Johnson?
1 in 16,777,216.

This can be answered by this logic. We've always been focusing on two specific people - Bethie and SP. But it can be any two from our eight.

Therefore, we have to multiply the probability of two players choosing the same team (let's use the 1 in 16 million number for now) with the number of combinations of 2 players out of a group of 8 players (i.e. we use the "choose" function - 8 choose 2).

If we were a bigger group, say out of 5000, the probability of any two players choosing the same exact team will be a lot bigger since now we multiply the same probability as before (1 in 16 million) with 5000 choose 2 (which is much bigger than 8 choose 2).

This is kind of like an old parlor trick. Get 30 people together, and it's almost certain that two of them will share a birthday

The Choose function... 8 choose 2... it basically gives you the amount of combinations of forming a subgroup of 2 from a group of 8.

How it's calculated is "a" choose "b" = "a" factorial divided by the product of "b" factorial and "b minus a" factorial.

To put it into words, Bethie and SP have a 1 in 16 million chance of picking the same team.

Bethie and TM also have a 1 in 16 million chance of picking the same team.

What are the odds of either Bethie and SP or Bethie and TM both picking the same team? 2 times 1 in 16 million. (1 in 16 million plus 1 in 16 million)

Now what are the odds of any two players from our 8 picking the same team... It's the odds of two players picking the same team (1 in 16 million) times the number of combinations of two players picked out of a group of 8.

We're not going with the 16 million number. Beth's original question was "What were the chances of someone picking the same team as she did?".

I'm convinced that the 16 million number only applies to two people picking the same predetermined roster. To put it another way:

The chances of two people matching a coin flip in any manner is 1/2.
The chances of two people both throwing heads is 1/4. (starting to repeat myself here...)

Let's work with how the size of the group affects the odds and the 4096 number.

And keep it simple for me, please. My Probability & Statistics course in college was about 35 years ago.

In a group of 3, there are 3 possible pairings of people (CC and SP, CC and TM, SP and TM).

What is the probability that CC and SP choose the same team? 1 in 4096

What is the probability that CC and TM choose the same exact specific team? 1 in 4096

What is the probability that SP and TM choose the same exact specific team? 1 in 4096

What is the probability that CC and SP or CC and TM or SP and TM choose the same exact specific team? 1 in 4096 + 1 in 4096 + 1 in 4096 = 3 times 1 in 4096

or to put it another way:

(3 choose 2) times 1 in 4096

BTW, 3 choose 2 = (3*2*1)/(2*1)= 3

Now if we up our group size to 8, we would have to count the number of subgroups of 2 out of a group of 8. The short cut way is to use 8 choose 2.

If we increase our group size to 8, there are 28 ways to pair up two people. If each pair has a probability of 1 out 4096 of picking the same team, then the probability that any pair of two people out of a group of 8 will be 28 times 1 out of 4096.

I think I get the hang up now. Once again, we are answering different questions.

You are right, in a group of 2 (CC and SP), there is a 1 in 4096 chance of picking the same team.

In a group of 8, there is 7 in 4096 chance that one of the other 7 picks the same team as CC.

Because next I want to discuss how our biases towards certain players enter into the equation. I mean, There are four players to choose from at each position, but there is not an equal chance of any of the four being picked. It's not like flipping coins, where the probability of either outcome is the same.

For example: Duncan is one of four players, but he might have a 75% chance of being picked, while with Nash and Marbury in the mix, Tony Parker has maybe a 15-20% chance of being picked.

If I said "what are the chances of two people (in a group of two, for now) picking a team with players A, B, C, D, E, and F (Name the 6 players with the lowest V. AVG), the chances would be greater than one in 16 million.

But if I said "what are the chances of two people picking a team with Duncan or Stoudamire, Marbury or Nash, Nowitzki or Marion, Finley, Ginobili, or McGrady and any one of four centers and four coaches, the chances would be much less.

So to answer Beth's question, it's really more like 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 x 4 x 4, or 384-1 divided by the group size of 8, or about 1/48.

But because some of the above combos are impossible because of the cap (No, I am not going to run through all 384 to find out how many there are), lets call it about 1 chance in 24.

That actually seems about right to me.

Plaw, I think you once again run into the trouble of counting the eight person. The probability of two people picking the same team is now 1 in 384, given our limitations. Understood. But in a group of 8, there's again only 7 possible combinations with one specific person. Therefore, there is a 7 in 384 chance that the other 7 matches with the specific one. Therefore, the probability is actually a little bit smaller than 1 in 48.

Of course, like you said, not all 384 combinations is possible. So in the end, the probability will be greater than 7 in 384. 1 in 24 is probably a good estimate because I bet over half of the 384 combinations is not possible, given salary cap restrictions. Just a hunch though.
