James Gandolfini - typecast now as Tony Soprano?

I think that, out of all the cast, James Gandolfini is the one most concerned about the future. Particularily, his!

He had a decent little career prior to The Sopranos, but after he was cast as the New Jersey mob boss for HBO's new series, all casting calls for movies have had the similar Tony Soprano-tough guy persona ("The Mexican," even though gay, was a hit-man). It didn't matter much, cause he always had The Sopranos to go back to.

Not anymore. After this season, that's it. I think Mr. Gandolfini faces a difficult future in the movies and TV - being typecast as a tough guy (not that being a tough guy hurt James Cagney much).

Thoughts?

I think Gandolfini is the LEAST one worried that the series is over. He's made a million dollars an episode for about what, 4 seasons now? He's the only cast member I've heard that's said that it was time for the Sopranos to end, that he was sick of Tony. All the other cast members were sad to see it end- for example, Drea de Matteo (Adriana) was so convincing in her final death scene becuase, she said, that she knew it was the "death" of her acting career.

So he'll have to play recurring roles as mafia toughguys, and maybe shoot a Sopranos film or two, and make millions.

Makes me shed a tear or two...

I disagree entirely. He's a versatile actor and I don't even think he's scratched the surface of his talent yet. George Clooney wasn't typecast as a doctor when he left ER, Sean Connery wasn't typecast as James Bond when he quit the series. Gandolfini will sail through it. He has the talent to do it, and more importantly he's as convincing in other characterisations as he is as Tony.

You want to talk typecast, let's talk about Elijah Wood. Forever a hobbit \:\)

Gandolfini is a wonderful actor. Hopefully he won't be typecast.

I dont think theres any reason to worry about T. Have you seen "Romance & Cigarettes".. Or what about "The man who wasent there", or even "Last Castle".. Gandolfini is a sublime actor, and can play all sorts of roles, beside a mob Boss.
Personally, even do i´m sad the Sopranos is ending, i´m lookin forward to se JG in other sort of roles, which im certain he´s going to get.
