Johnny Ola first meeting with Mike.

Johnny Ola first meeting with Mike. - 12/22/21 06:56 PM

Why did Johnny Ola keep on his overcoat at his meeting with Mike in Lake Tahoe? Appears it was a warm day. Except for the women showing off their mink stoles. Everyone was dressed for nice weather. Is it true that living in Florida does make individuals blood thinner?

Well, you've hit on one of the Big Anomalies of GFII:

Yes, it appears to be a warm day (or at least not cold). And, it would fit the Church's schedule for First Communions, which I think are traditionally held on Pentecost Sunday, seven Sundays after Easter. That would put Anthony's party sometime in June, But, the shooting happened that evening, and Michael left immediately to see Roth in Miami. Then he visited Pentangeli in NY--and it was snowing. Then he went to Havana, and was there at New Year's Eve. He obviously didn't stretch all this out over six or seen months, so Anthony's First Communion and the shooting had to have happened sometime in December.

So, why was Johnny Ola wearing an overcoat? My guess is, to keep warm. I think he told Coppola: "Listen, Francis, I don't care what you say, it's cold as hell in Tahoe in December, and I don't have a mink stole to keep me warm." lol

The plot thickens! December and January are the coldest months in Lake Tahoe. Temps range from a low of 18 to a high of 37 with 14 days of snow in December. Doubtful if the people for the most part would be dressed so lightly. Also, there was a lack of any Christmas decorations anywhere. Is there any clues or documentation (timeline) of when Michael did all the travelling? Seems to be a lot of travelling in the space of one month or less. Especially in 1958 when jet travel really didn't take off that much, (Pun intended). I tend to think that the wearing of mink coats/stoles in warm climates was a way for females to show off their wealth. Down here in Florida in the Old Days. The women would wear their minks even for breakfast in Wolfies.

As TB points out, first communions take place in late spring or early summer. Mine was in May.

Apparently, the timetable is quite stretched from the Communion to Michael's visit with FP.

When you think about it, why did Michael visit with Roth? That visit must have been arranged well before the Communion, and also before the assassination attempt, before Michael's real or feigned suspicion of FP, but well AFTER Michael and Roth had arranged whatever they did arrange regarding Batista and Cuba. So, why visit Roth in the first place?

" So, why visit Roth in the first place?"

(Oli, Michael was understandably obsessed with finding out who was the traitor in his family. Since Michael knew that Roth was behind the attack, he needed to keep Roth "relaxed, confident that our relationship is still good..." so he could stay close to Roth and, through that closeness, find the traitor. Or, as Johnny O said more succinctly, "keep your friends close..."

True enough TB. However, Michael's trip to see Roth must have been planned before the assassination attempt. Thus, there was no traitor at that point to ferret out.

I reckon the Havana trip would have been arranged well before the Communion but the visit to Roth in Miami was after the assassination attempt because he wanted Roth to know there is gonna be more blood shed so that there's no danger of starting another war.

Yes, I'm sure Michael had to set up some kind of meeting with Roth, prior to the shooting, so that Roth could introduce him to Batista and be blessed as Roth's successor. Perhaps he hadn't set up the date yet, or maybe that was one of the things he was discussing with Ola at Anthony's party. I'm guessing that Michael rushed up the meeting right after the shooting to assure Roth that they were still good--and to hasten finding out who was the traitor.

Havana meeting not expected to happen because Michael dead that night, set up well before the Communion but the visit to Roth in Miami same as the bodyguard after the assassination attempt

When he left Tahoe he didn't know Roth was behind the attack so visit was not finding out who was the traitor but because nobody wants another war

I can't remember where exactly, but I believe I saw some Halloween decorations in Tahoe sometime after the shooting (a spider, or spiderwebs or something like that) so I always assumed the shooting happened around Halloween, and Michael was traveling throughout November and December. I'd have to watch again though

I think the Communion was in November.

When Michael visits Roth, Hyman is watching a college football game. Back then college football ended by Thanksgiving weekend, other than bowls on/around New Year's Day (at which time Michael/Roth were in Cuba).

I'd have to go back to listen but others have posted that the game broadcast was USC vs. Notre Dame. In 1958, they played on November 29th. So the Communion/shooting had to be before that.

Woltz, I've never known or heard of a Communion in the fall or winter.

I think that Coppola exercised his license to better fit his storyboard a big part of which was Batista's New Year's abdication.

The current Code of Canon Law highlights this “Easter obligation.”

After being initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, each of the faithful is obliged to receive holy communion at least once a year. This precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season unless it is fulfilled for a just cause at another time during the year. (Can. 920)
Technically speaking, anyone can receive their First Communion, with the permission of their local pastor, at any time of the year. However, because of the Eucharist’s close connection to the Easter season, it is most often celebrated on one of the Sundays following Easter.
