Just watched GFII again - 10/05/06 06:10 AM

I just wanted to refresh some thoughts or mayb bring up some topics but i just was watchin GFII and these are some things i noticed which i didnt b4

for example Like i was trying to figure out how Micheal figured out it was Hyman Roth: I think how at the end of there conversation he brought up Pentangli one more time asking him "So Pentangli is dead man?" and roth just looks away and says "He small potatoes" knowing if micheal goes after him it will relieve the sucpicion on his part.

Also in the Pentangli and micheal convo how he emphasized how it happened in his home where is wife and kids are, idk if it was done purposely but i look it as there is an unwritted rule where this is not done but he probly saw Roth as someone who would commit such an act.

Another thing i liked about this convo at the end the last line micheal says is "Then i can find out who the traitor in my family is." the very next scene is the one with fredo on the phone wit johnny. That was done nicely which be hard for a first or even 2nd time viewer to catch.

Yes the connection between Michael talking about the traitor in the family and the next scene showing Fredo was a great foreshadowing. I thought, however the scene was of Fredo's wife being hysterical followed that conversation with Tom.

Although the Tahoe attack came as a complete surprise, Michael figured out right away that Roth, not Pentangeli, was behind it:
In a nutshell, Pentangeli was obviously set up as the patsy. Roth wanted to whack Michael (for reasons that I won't go into now). He saw Anthony's party as a prime opportunity. He knew Pentangeli would be there, contentious over Michael's support of Roth and the Rosato brothers. Pentangeli would seem to have a perfect motivation to whack Michael, and would make the perfect fall-guy for the crime.
But Michael, crafty fellow, saw right away that it was just too pat. Frankie wasn't smart enough, or ambitious enough, to risk killing Michael for his own benefit. As he told Michael later, "I don't have your head for the big deals." True, he wanted Michael "off my back." But Michael figured that wasn't enough reason for him to start a war that he'd eventually lose--especially because Frankie was in no position to take over the Corleone Family interests or run them from New York. I also think that, in the minutes after the shooting, Michael saw that Roth had been jollying him along--and really wanted him out of the picture.

Following on your point TB, Michael did know right away it was Roth...when he makes Tom the acting Don he says "If what I think happened happened, I'm leaving here tonight."
He did leave that night and he went directly to Miami to see Hyman Roth, and ask for permission to kill Pentangeli....thus keeping his enemies closer.

OK:
Roth and Vito had been partners (as Roth reminded Michael), but only in the Prohibition-era booze business (as Roth also reminded Michael-- not in the gambling business. As far as we can see, Vito had his New York gambling empire, Roth his Western and Havana empire.

But Michael began making moves on Roth's domain even before Vito died. The first business deal we see Michael involved in after he returned from Sicily was to move Moe Green, Roth's best friend, out of his hotel--and he had him whacked when Moe refused. By the beginning of GFII (late 1958), Michael has moved to Nevada--Roth's territory--owns or controls three Nevada hotel/casinos and is moving in on a fourth, partly owned by Roth. And he clearly has designs on Roth's Havana holdings. He's made it clear: he wants what Roth has. Roth concluded, correctly, that in Michael's mind, there was no room for both of them.
That's why Roth was deceiving Michael by acting like he was his father, and Michael his heir-apparent. Roth was buying time until he could figure out a way to take Michael out. Anthony's party was the opportunity. When that failed, Roth lured Michael to Havana where (he thought mistakenly) that he could squash Michael like a bug. But Michael was one step ahead of him by that point.
