Fabrizio's Hat

Fabrizio's Hat - 06/30/06 06:40 PM

What kind of hat is Fabrizio wearing at Michael and Appolonia's wedding in Sicily? It's like a black, wide-brim fedora but it's got kind of a western feel to it (Clint Eastwood's hat style in the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly). I've been looking for something close to it on the net but I haven't com close. Please help.

Can anyone tell me where to buy pants like the type Johnny Oleo wears. I can't find them anywhere. To make do I pull a pair of polyester slacks up so that the belts at mid-chest then I have someone cut each pant leg at about mid-calf.

I can't believe it myself. This board has the most knowledgable people on their subject that I've come across. You folks can't be stumped! I'll bet if I asked what kind of shoes Sonny was wearing when he kicked the crap out of Carlo, I'd get the answer.

Re: Fabrizio's Hat - 07/09/06 02:59 PM

It's both, Part. Borsalino Hatters got started with that style of hat in Allesandria, Italy in 1857. The firm's still in business, I think, but the style has become generic for all makers' hats of that general style, over the years. Fabrizio wears one at Michael and Apollonia's wedding. Willy Cicci wears one while controlling the crowd when Sonny beats up Carlo. A well-regarded gangster movie, starring Jeal Claude Belmondo and Alain Delon, was called "Borsalino," after their hats. Orthodox Jews wear them today--it's as much a part of their regular dress as a black suit and a yarmulke. The Borsalino firm also makes many other styles of hats and caps--it's a big producer.

The other day I was leaving my favorite store - Bottle King, in Ramsey, NJ - and a guy in front of me was buying two cases of Turnbull wine from the Napa Valley. Not only does this guy know cars, guns, clothes, mob guys and other obscure shit that nobody else knows, but he's got a winery!

MC, Bottle King does have an excellent selection, do they not? Have you tried the Buy Rite in Nanuet, though? Great selection and good prices. And, believe it or not, the Shop Rite Liquors in Pearl River isn't bad either. One of these days we will run into one another. I expect to see you at Marcello's, especially with the anniversary special that they're running right now.

And you're right, that Turnbull is an amazingly diverse gentleman.

Sorry, no connection to Turnbull wines of California. ohwell
Bottle King is the best overall place to buy wines, particularly if you have their club card. The selection is excellent, their picks and choices are always good. Their regular prices are always competitive, and the club prices are unbeatable.
Trader Joe's, though it doesn't have the variety of wines available at Bottle King, is even better in some respects. The wines they bring in on their own labels or via exclusive arrangements are absolutely unbeatable--I've never gone wrong with any of them. They sell wines in the $4-$12 range that would cost $20-60 anywhere else.

Rumor has it that Turnbull once was drinking wine (heavily) while visiting his friend who is an auto mechanic. While deep in converstion about cars Turnbull reached behind himself for a glass but accidentally grabbed a carrafe with some used engine oil. Before he realized his mistake he took a sip and then, without missing a beat, he pronounced it as from a 1940 Buick Special, Model 46C, Straight Eight Cylinder.

My taste buds confirmed that all the Corleones' cars used Genco Pura Olive Oil in their engines. They got a good price by the case... wink
