But the one that survived DT, the one who had his finger in every pie throughout the Trilogy, yet managed to survive - Manolo!

Obviously, many people die violent deaths in the Godfather trilogy--the proportion is obviously much higher than in a typical group of people of comparable size in real life who aren't involved in crime. But I don't think the natural death toll is that remarkable, given that the trilogy deals with an entire family over the course of 80 years.

Bruno and Philip Tattaglia.
Interesting: Who dies by natural causes?
- Vito
- Michael
- Signora Corleone
- Genco
- Tom(?)
Which reminds me a little of the fate of the Russian revolutionary:
Lenin just as Vito got very sick after being shot by an assassin, still he held some strings.
One by one all the others were killed by Stalin (=Michael).
We don't know what happened to Tom, but he may have shared Trotsky's fate.
In the end Stalin/Michael dies alone. Only his bulldog Beria/Neri survived.
Stalin/Michael was careless about his kids, so they died.
I know, I stretched it a little, but I time and again I find parallels between Stalin & Michael.

I like your analogies, Danito. But Khrushchev also fits the Michael model. After Stalin's death, he made himself look "weak" (like Michael), the better to force the conspirator (Beria/Barzini) to the fore. Then Khruschev/Michael rallied his forces to whack Beria/Barzini. And the attempted coup against Khrushchev in 1957, led by the "Moustache Petes" Kaganovich and Molotov has a parallel to Michael's Great Massacre of 1955.

"The Godfather Part IV: Georgian Rule"
awesome analogies, people.
also, i noticed the way the Corleones operated at first using an "isolationist policy", similar to the policy of the United States in it's initial stages. Then later, they adopted an "expansionist" outlook, or what's known as, "American exceptionalism", where they looked to reach out as far as they could, beyond their borders, or the confines of just New York for example, or just the gambling business in order to pursue self-interests- eventually reaching the Vatican.
The family's strategy could be a great analogy to American foreign policy.
Maybe I'll write my thesis about it someday...

if there was 1 character that could have survived amd changes the whole outcome of the story.... who do you think it would be? and how?

Re: GF Death Toll - 02/16/10 07:07 PM
Vito's mother, because that would have meant Don Ciccio foresook all vengence on the Corleones, and Vito would never have come to America, and there would be no story.

i think if sonny would have survived but been in critical condition long enought for the story to play where michele gains control and sonny comes back looking for his rightful spot and a power struggle between brothers and family forced to choose sides... just an idea

I've wondered if it was necessary to kill McCluskey. He had no personal loyalty to Solozzo, and was always willing to make an accomodation. Michael had just a split second to make a decision, of course, but his shooting of the police captain was the pretext that allowed the bystander families to declare war on the Corleones. Tataglia alone could never have outfought Santino.

Mike: "then I'll kill 'em both."

"So what do we do with this crooked cop?" He would be a witness. Or should Michael hit him in the face and break his jaw?
