When Tom is kidnapped by Sollozzo......

When Tom is kidnapped by Sollozzo...... - 11/17/05 05:11 AM

He is carrying various items, obviously he has been Christmas shopping. One item is a snow sled. Do you think it is for his kids or Sonny's kids and where would they go sledding in NYC?

Or would a soldier pull the kids around on the sled inside the compund?

If I was posting on the IMDB board, I would say it is a subtle reference to 'Rosebud' in Orson Welle's 'Citizen Kane'. But since I'm not I think it is just a prop to make clear that Tom is innocently shopping when kidnapped by the tactless Sollozzo.

Ive read in a deleted script point, Tom mercilessly beats Sollozzo to death with the sled. Kind of interesting.

They lived on Long Island. There are some hills there for snow sledding. Two years (to the week) after that scene was to have taken place New York City had its biggest snowstorm ever (over 26" in the one day total).

I lived in Brooklyn (part of NYC) as a kid, and there were plenty of places to sled. And, not infrequently, plenty of snow to sled on.

You can sled in Central Park...all over Long Island, and in the other suburbs. Tom was probably getting the sled for Andrew.

OK, I this non-New Yorker needs help. New York City is comprised of five burroughs: the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. In The Godfather, I thought they were referring to Long Beach. In this thread, people are referring to Long Island.

Is Long Island within one of the five burroughs, or is it a surburb just outside New York City? Where is Long Beach in relation?

Long Beach is on Long Island in Nassau County. It is not in one of the five boroughs.

Like Turnbull, I was also raised in NYC, but in the Bronx. As a matter of fact, not only were there places to go sledding, but Van Cortland Park (where my grandfather worked for the WPA when it was built) had skiing at one time.

Long Beach is in Long Island. Long Island is a suburb of NYC.

Long Island is geologically a terminal morraine (the last Ice Age scraped all the topsoil off from Massachusetts and Connecticut and the glaciers pushed it into the Atlantic Ocean. When the glaciers retreated the land left behind formed Long Island).

The Island is about 120 miles long. On its western end are the New York City boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn. The rest of the Island is suburban in nature and made up of Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The location of the Corleone mall (in the book and movie) was in Long Beach, a suburban town on the south shore of Nassau County.

After reading your post, I realized that I spelled "burrough" incorrectly. The five administrative/political divisions of New York City are actually "boroughs."

No wonder that when I went on google to look for "New York City burroughs," many of the listed results were for "William S. Burroughs." smile
