Johnny Ola's Tweed Overcoat

Johnny Ola's Tweed Overcoat - 08/15/05 11:40 AM

In GF2, Johnny Ola arrives at the Tahoe party in a tweed overcoat. He pulls up in nifty motor boat. Everyone at the party is dressed as if the temperature is in the mid 70s. There are people water skiing and a guy can even be seen in his bathing suit near the water's edge.

When Johnny meets Michael he said he has just been with "our friend" in Miami. So why the tweed overcoat? Is this an FCC oversight? Just one of those continuity things that seem a little odd.

Maybe he liked to dress classy.

He was meeting Michael, so probably out of respect he made sure to be well dressed, for respect. Wasn't Michael wearing a suit as well?

The point I was making with the tweed overcoat was that it was warm weather in Tahoe (summer/early fall), he just came from Miami (allegedly) and he's wearing a heavy overcoat. Strikes me as odd.

He may have been expecting a cold reception from Michael. wink

Yes but Michael was wearing one of them shiny silk suits with his oily hair, posing himself like a real Amurcan. Ola was dressed in tweed, which is how they figured out the hitters were hired out of New York.

Maybe he figured that since he'd be motorboated to Michael's house on a lake, that it might be wise to dress warmly, he could always take the jacket off it it became too hot.

I'm sure he also had on clean underwear without any tears, in case he was god forbid involved in an accident on the way over. Probably washed behind the ears, too.

That Johnny Ola, he was raised by a wise mom.

Now that's the kind of insightful answer I was hoping for. Thanks SC.

I spotted it first by the voice, especially when Ola is on the phone with Fredo in the hotel, when Fredo said it was "no one" on the phone.

It's been a while since I've watched GF or the Sopranos but I don't remember the looks doing anything it was only the voice.

From what I've noticed though, there aren't too many different people who do Mafia movies, they seem to all be the same ones.

His mother probably told him to be careful not to get a draft while traveling.

More seriously: Johnny was probably the only guest at Anthony's party who was dressed correctly for the season. If we work the chronology, the party had to have been held around mid-December because Michael left that night for Miami to see Roth, and probably less than a week later, at Frankie's home in NY (where it was snowing), and thence to Havana for the New Year.
It's mightly cold in Tahoe in December. Consider the following from the official Tahoe tourist website:

"Average daily high temperatures in December, January and February are 40, 37, and 39 degrees respectively... Sierra snow is unique. It falls in great quantities in relatively short periods from late November to early April, on a ratio of one day of snowfall for every four days of sunshine. The average winter snowpack is 225 inches, or nearly 20 feet, approximately four times the average in Fairbanks, Alaska."

No wonder Deanna was drunk that night--she probably had to tank up on brandy to keep from freezing in that skimpy gown she was wearing.
