Fredo and his reward

Fredo and his reward - 07/30/07 02:54 PM

In the boathouse scene when Fredo says "there was something in it for me on my own", what do you think was in it for fredo, did Johnny Ola and Roth promise him the Donship after they kidnapped Mike or something else?

Excellent question. It was probably ownership of some territory.

Also I think there is something of a contradiction because when Michael leaves and makes Tom the Don he talks about "Fredo and his men" so that would indicate he was doing more than running mickeey mouse nightclubs

They probably never told Fredo what exactly he would get, but the prospect of doing something on his own was too tempting for the weak, stupid one.

Exactly. And, when people are out for revenge, they seldom think through logical stuff like consequences or rewards. Fredo's outburst in that scene showed the depth of his resentment of Michael. When Roth and Ola made their proposal, I'm guessing Fredo was focused more at his opportunity to get back at Michael than on the specifics of his reward. Roth and Ola probably knew that, too.
If you buy my reasoning here, you might be inclined to believe, as I do, that Fredo did know it was gonna be a hit.

I am pretty sure they promised him they were going to give him Roth's/Ola's Chrysler to make the airport runs. Fredo was getting a little tired of having to do the airport pickups in his little 2 seater sports car.

Hmmmmmm interesting thought. Since, it seems logical that Fredo was the one that opened the drapes, it follows that he should have known it was to be able to see Mike for a hit.

Of course the question arises, when did Mike suspect that Fredo was the one that opened the drapes?

That little two-seater was a Mercedes 300SL Gullwing coupe--worth a fortune then, even more now. Fredo must have been doing very well in the Mickey Mouse nightclub business.

Unbelievable car!

Here's a bit of it's history: Mercedes Gullwing Coupe

His "reward" would probably be a gunshot from behind (ironically just like his "reward" from Michael). I have no reason to believe that Roth and Ola would have actually given him anything once they got what they wanted. They knew he was resentful and would go along with their plan; after that he was expendable.

He would have even done better if he would have been in the Mickey Mouse business like Walt Disney.

If so, did Fredo actually think he was capable of being The Don? Surely even Fredo wasn't that stupid, or perhaps I'm giving him too much credit.

Fredo DIDN'T know that it was going to be a hit. I simply do NOT believe that Fredo was heartless or ruthless enough to have his own brother killed so that he could take over the family.

I've said this several times over the years ; After the hit attempt on Mike, what does Fredo say when Ola calls him?

"You guys lied to me."

He didn't knoqw that it was going to be a hit.

The phone call is what takes him off the hook to me.
