THE GODFATHER SAGA - which is not available on DVD. You can, however, find a bootleg of poor quality on ebay.

the extended scene with the yelling argument between janie and her mother is not in the saga. at least not in my copy of the saga, so i must have seen it elsewhere. thanks for your reply

Bernie, you must have a bootleg version of the Saga then.

The Janie/mother scene was in the "Saga" version shown many times on TV. That is still the best version, IMO.

Turnbull may be the best person to answer this. But when I was first getting into the Godfather in 2001/2002, I watched the Saga/chronological version on AMC. I may be wrong, but I swear that the dialogue where Woltz says the "daigo, guinea, wop" line was in a different scene than the theatrical version. Maybe it wasn't the Saga, but it was something because my wife and I both remarked that we had not remembered that dialogue in any scene beside the production studio. I want to say the dialogue took place at the dinner Woltz & Hagen had.

Am I just remembering incorrectly? I have not viewed the Saga in at least 4 years, so I have never been able to rewatch for an answer to my question.

Goombah, your confusion may be prompted by the inclusion of the deleted scene in the "Saga," and the use of different slurs in different scenes:
In the theatrical version, Hagen enters the Paramount lot and the set, a bell rings, and then he's next to Woltz, who says, "OK, start talkin'." After Tom makes his pitch, Woltz makes his threats, including, "...I don't care how many dago guinea wop greaseballs come out of the woodwork..."

In the Saga version, that scene is preceded by a few seconds of Woltz giving Janie the pony. "Unaccustomed as I am to public...drinking.." he starts, then says how much they all love Janie. Then he turns to Tom and says, "OK, start talkin'." But the "dago" etc. phrase is still there, not elsewhere.

Another possible source of confusion: During the dinner, Woltz's parting shot at Hagen is, "You tell that goombah that if he tries any rough stuff, I ain't no bandleader...yeah, I heard that story." Nasty slur, but not the same slurs heard earlier.

Turnbull: Thank you, kind sir. Your knowledge is always appreciated.

I knew you would clear it up for me, one way or another. By asking you, I'm reminded of Nicky's comment regarding Ace's gambling knowledge in Casino: "If he don't know, nobody knows."

nobody is replying to the fact that before tom leaves woltz's house, jaime and her mother have a long screaming argument. i am not confused.

No one said that you were confused. And no one denied that the scene exists. You admitted that you have a bootleg copy of the Saga. Bootleg copies of the saga have been know to have missing scenes. Obviously your copy is missing some of those scenes. ;\)

The Saga was only released on VHS. Therefore, to make a DVD out of it - bootleg.

The DVD is merely a copy of the VHS tapes, no? How can they edit scenes out of it?

I don't belive that the Saga was released on VHS either. I think that it was strictly a made for Television version.

Re: extra scenes - G1 - 05/02/07 07:17 PM

That's yet another deleted scene (actually a snippet). In the theatrical version, Tom gets up from the table and says, "Thank you for the dinner and a very pleasant evening. If your car can take me to the airport...Mr. Corleone is a man who needs to hear bad news at once." He then gives him a patented Robert Duvall look. Woltz stares back intently.

In the extra snippet, Tom pauses on the stairway outside the dining room on his way out because he hears a commotion. He looks up and sees a disheveled Janie at the railing, with her mother tugging her back (presumably into Woltz's bedroom).

Isnt there also a difference in the scenes after Hagen leaaves? I seem to recall in the Saga version that there is a specific meeting about how to deal with Woltz, and Vito specifically says not to use the information about his relationship with the girl, after which the horse head thing ensues. I think in the film they cut that part out and only talk about Solozzo in the meeting.

I believe that the Jack Woltz character is loosely based on Jack Warner of Warner Brothers. It was rumored that Jack Warner had a reputation for demanding sex from those actresses that were under contract to him.

Yes, you might say that the starlets all worked closely under him.

Re: extra scenes - G1 - 05/02/07 07:56 PM

Puzo loved that "casting couch" stuff. I thought it completely ruined THE LAST DON and I found the Hollywood scenes to be the worst parts of the novel THE GODFATHER.

Re: extra scenes - G1 - 05/02/07 08:01 PM

I agree PB. I found the 'hollywood' subplots in The Last Don very tough chapters to get through. Otherwise the rest of the story was pretty damn good.

Write about what you know, so the saying goes. I s'pose we couldn't blame Puzo for doing that, but he could have made the Hollywood plots a bit more interesting.

I have the five DVD boxset and on the Bonus Material DVD, the deleted scenes from the Saga are there (including the tussle between Janey and her mom). I especially like the deleted scenes concerning Fabrizio.

Re: extra scenes - G1 - 05/02/07 11:17 PM

to paul
i have a 4 dvd box set. it has the mother pulling janey away, but janey does not speak. ( i saw her yell at her mother.) i have a 5 vhs box set plus a sixth tape. is that what you mean? if so, exactly where is the "tussle" between mother and daughter?
Posted By: bernie

Re: extra scenes - G1 - 05/03/07 01:01 AM

i apologize to paul. i correct myself. the boxed dvd set is 5 disks. however, there is not an argument between mother and daughter. the mother is the only one who speaks. since nobody serems to have seen the argument, maybe i dreampt it.

Re: extra scenes - G1 - 05/03/07 05:33 AM

Hm. Maybe it's only available on Region 2. I'll have another look at it and if I've dropped a bollock I'll let you know \:\)

There is a deleted scene following the Woltz dinner--a good one, too. It starts with Connie and Carlo fighting in the Don's house in the mall. Mama says, "Connie and Carlo are always fighting," Sonny gets up to "teach that brother in law of mine a lesson," and Vito pulls him down--"never interfere between a man and his wife...your place is here with Tom and me." He then asks Tom about the Woltz meeting, saying, "...is it true about the young starlet..." When Tom acknowledges it, he says, "infamia, infamia..." Then he asks if Woltz has balls. "Fuggeddabout it," says Tom.
That's a long way of saying that the Janie thing does come up in that scene, but there's no specific mention of not using it against Woltz.
