Dissapointing?

I enjoyed the DVD a lot.
However, the Bonus was a little dissapinting.
They never showed the speeches people actually wanted to see (i.e Robert Deniro on his award)
NOTHING on Brando at all.
The featurees were all like 20 years old, I think.*They could have atleast fimed a new one for the DVD, and hell apart from one or two, they were all too short. The most dissapointing was "Music of GF" which was the theme being played with insignificant babble in the bgrnd for two minutes.
Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyd it, I just wish it was more than some old stuff thrown together.
What's really worth it though is FFC commentary on the films.

same here, this was very dissapointing. i was expecting "brucca la tierra" or a full version of the music. but the audition was cool . . .

I don't want to say that it was disappointing, but that there's more about the movies than just Part III. The point has been made more than once about it. Sure, I'd really like to have seen the Brando award. I don't know if Paramount had anything to do with not putting it on there or what, but it was a disappointment.

I agree - I mean, surely they have the Brando refusal speech (read out by the Indian girl) somewhere on tape? That's what I woud've wanted to see, and DeNiro's acceptance speech, and most importantly: SOME REAL HONEST DOCUMENTARIES ON GODFATHER IIIs failure...although I didn't quite get through the whole disc in the rental time I had, I don't think they would've had Coppola commenting on the crap-ball that is Part III...correct me if I'm wrong, like I said I didn't get through it all.

I found two Easter Eggs on the disc, all on my own - one with the Sopranos watching a bootlegged copy of the Godfather (!!!BRILLIANT!!! A must for any Sopranos/Godfather fans), and an unamusing James Caan audition Brando-take-off thingy.

Oh well, they did better than the Kubrick Collection. I bought it for the films only, because there wasn't even a bonus disc (although there was a brilliant documentary with it) for features. I just found trailers, a documentary on the making of The Shining (also a commentary option), some interviews about Eyes Wide Shut and that was it. The worst crime of all though was missing out Kubrick's second-best film, Dr Strangelove...I bought it for the films only, but without DS, it's just sad.

I feel that Coppola's commentaries for all 3 of the movies outweigh any let-down in the extras department.

You can't expect them to put down their own film. Anyways FFC likes III I guess.

The Soprano's clip: Go to the DVD Credits on the disc and all the way to the end, hit NEXT instead of PREVIOUS and it'll show.

The James Caan clip: Go to the family tree, click on Sonny's picture (or is it Caan?).

To see the Godfather in many different languages, go to Set Up, click right with your DVD remote and a globe will show. Click it.

The Mario Puzo one: Go to Mario's bio, forgot where it's at, and click the DVD remote to reveal a $ symbol.

I was very happy with the DVD Collection. In my collection of 200+ DVDs, the Godfather Trilogy is by far the most prized entry in my collection. I guess it would have been cool to see DeNiro accept his award, and to see Brando NOT accept his, but I'm sure that there are some fees that the Academy Awards wanted to charge Paramount to insert those. Not that the other clips came for free, but maybe the Academy figured that they could charge much more for those clips than the ones where Coppola comes up.

Why didn't Brando accept his award?
and why show that ****** producer (seriously, I think that guy is bent go watch his speech) take his award? he was nobody. Nobody knew who he was, nobody cares today.

There's been many posts on Brando's refusal in the search engine. In short, Brando used it to bring attention to protest the treatment of Native Americans in general and in movies.
That's how it is in Hollywood. The producer usually goes up and gets the best picture award, usually along w/ director and others. But the producer is the main one.

I agree with you completely and I was also very dissapointed.

Gee, dissapointed is a big word to use just because they don't show a few acceptance clips from the Academy Awards.....

All in all, the lack of these clips shouldn't take away from what is on the bonus disc....I too wanted to see more material about Marlon Brando, but the sun will still rise in the morning

Consider yourselves lucky, many of us Martin Scorsese and Scarface fan's are still eagerly awaiting the "special treatment" (re-mastered version of these movies on DVD with extras).

How do you get the commentary? Do you just go to the menu on each disc & it's on there? I haven't really looked for it, but sounds like a good idea. I'm not a HUGE fan of the commentary (I tried watching From Hell, which I LOVE with the commentary on, and I felt it just destroyed the movie!). Is the commentary any good or no? If you like good commentary, I would suggest any 3 of the Screams! I LOVE that trilogy also & Wes Craven did a great job with staying on topic & just telling you interesting things in each scene! Very fun & interesting to watch/listen to.

I'm also still eagerly waiting for Scarface to be released on DVD! I haven't heard anything new yet, but I have heard the Goodfellas is going to be re-released on DVD! I hope Casino & Raging Bull are also!

Let's just say that it's not unusual to find commentaries with 5 people discussing the movie, yet they can not find something interesting to talk about.

Coppola provides more then 8 hours of insightful commentary all alone.

BTW: I haven't heard Wes Craven's commentaries on the Scream trilogy but i'm a huge fan of his Nightmare on Elm Street and New Nightmare.

I think this is the first thread that I've read any negative comments on the DVD. I have never seen it, but plan to. I thought most everyone thought it was good!!

I didn't find the audio and video quality of the DVD set to be a signficant improvement over the (excellent) quality of the 25th Anniversary VHS tape set. But the extras disc made it worthwhile.

With the James Caan clip you go to the family tree, go to the Santino part, then press up so that the picture of Sonny is highlighted. Press enter and you are at a James Caan bio. Press left and the picture of Caan is highlighted. Press enter.

For the first time, I disagree with you. The DVD "video" quality are significantly better than the VHS. The colors are richer, and the darkness is increased (making the Don's office scenes at the wedding, even more breathtaking). There are less grains and "dust" things (whatever they're called). But, Turnbull, I do understand where you're coming from. Because the VHS is breathtaking in its own right. In fact, I think it comes down to preference. The DVD is richer and darker, but the VHS has a certain "lighter" ambience that is beautiful.

As for the DVD audio, I don't pay attention to them as how most DVD reviews do. But, actually I do think that the VHS audio is better, and the Novel for TV is even better than the VHS, IMHO.

the trailer for The Godfather 1 was strange too. When the Godfather first came out, i dont think from seeing that trailer gives you an idea of what its about. All it is is a photo gallery with music.

I agree with the poster who dislike the commentary. FFC commentary on GF III was rather bad. For the most part, FFC was goo-gooing and ga-ga all over his daughter. "Lucus stated that Sophia is sooo beautiful". ENOUGH!

The rich colors, sounds, etc. is almost like seeing it on screen. After all, how can VHS compete with DVD?

Robert DeNiro was not present to accept his award. FFC accept the award for him. He was filming Taxi Driver at the time but Martin Scorsse was present to accept the award for Ellen Burstyn for Alice Does not live here anymore.

At that time, it was not fashionable for NY actors to attend Hollywood functions.

I think this trailer is THE best in ALL of Movie Trailer history. If i'd seen that in 1971, i wouldn't have been able to sit still until it came out!
