Mario, (R.I.P.) said it best - GF IV

Mario, (R.I.P.) said it best - GF IV - 10/12/01 04:32 PM

In the bonus footage, Mario Puzo says with all his heart, that Godfather 4 would be a sure hit.
The premise is that it would show the rise of the Corleone family in the 20's & 30's.
I totally agree.
Some of the best scenes in the book were about a young Vito consolidating power and rising to be the premier Don.
I really think this should be considered by Paramount.

I agree. Although after what happen with GFIII a lot of people would rather leave everything as is rather then further diminish I and II. What Paramount does not realize what a cash cow they have with IV. If done right, (that's the big key) you bring in all the oldtimers that grew up with I and II. At the same time, with the right casting (today's comtempoary stars, DeCaprio, etc) you would bring in a whole new younger audience. Which would lead gen. X'ers back to I and II by buying the DVD and VHS copies. A 1920'S, 30's movie not only would bring out those "silent years", but at the same time would be a movie that could stand alone for that younger generation who is not familar with I and II. I have always said we do not need a 90's version of the family. But IV will never happen so thats that...

If he were to play Vito in another Godfather movie then you can you say to yourself,"DiCaprio is playing the father of Al Pacino and is the same person as Marlon Brando and Robert Deniro".

Has a nice ring to it,doesnt it. wink wink wink

I guess we'll just have to wait until Coppola is in another financial pinch! wink

The thing i don't understand is that GFIII is so maligned, and criticized, unfairly in my opinion. Critics saw some merit in it and Ebert said that because of the first two films and their stature, it works a lot better than it should with its flashbacks and realistic timeline and so on (when GFIII came out, Michael's memories were 20 years or so of Kay, so were the audiences).

Many noted critics state that GFIII is no "poorly conceived curiosity, but a film that deserves to stand alongside it's predecessors."

Of course my whole argument is based on what critics say... but, IMO, those who criticize III for not being as good as I & II, must realize that II was probably not as tight as I (two stories perhaps diluted action, and de niro no match for brando, altho great).

In sum, GFIII is a real Godfather movie. GFI, in Coppola's words was basically so he could make the films he "really wanted to make," in other words a stepping stone for him, though it became much more. GFIII was also from a financial impulse. So what, i say to it's detractors. Even Mozart composed mostly for money. That doesn't diminish his accomplishments.

Sorry, might be wrong forum, but had to respond to person's post on how he hates GFIII.

When I read Coppola's comments that 'there will not be a GF IV', I took that as an opening where it won't really be a Godfather movie.

Let's be frank, the trilogy is about Michael. The flashback scenes in II were used to parallel Michael's rise, they weren't really about Vito.

It's feasible they could make a 20-30's period piece and call it The Don or Vito.

As far as DiCaprio, I thought he was thought to play Sonny, not Vito. If it's possible to make De Niro look 30ish without too much makeup then I'd go for that, but he's older now than Brando was in I.

IMO, DeNiro looks younger now than Brando did in GFI

Actually FFC and Mario Puzo (TRIP)
had written the first half of the script

And the second half would be a story about vincent's rise on a parallel with the rise of vito.

This would be much the same of GF2

Listen to FFC's commentary on the end credits of GF III. He describes the whole concept of Part IV. It is very interesting.

Re: Mario, (R.I.P.) said it best - GF IV - 11/14/01 03:23 AM

The FFC commentary at the end of III about a possible IV certainly flies in the face of Coppola's stance against such a project. He goes into plot detail with some enthusiasm. I think the rumor with DiCaprio has him playing Sonny, not Vito. I really don't see either as very viable. If DeNiro plays Vito, why not bring Bruno Kirby back as Clemenza?

While all of the FFC commentaries are fascinating, GFIII is especially so as he takes his detractors on. He (not so convincingly) defends his daughter's casting as Mary. He also does not consider GFIII as a sequel, but rather as an epilogue. A sequel would have had Michael as still vibrant and looking to expand his empire. FFC was rather looking for a story of how Michael pays for his sins. Interesting stuff.

DiCaprio would be a terrible Sonny (or Vito). He doesn't have a "tough-guy" look, and he's a pretty crappy actor. Scott Caan all the way!

Leo did a fantastic job playing Johnny Depp's retarded teenaged brother in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape". After that, did nothing of any value and has pretty much disappeared since "Titanic". I don't think he'd fit in anywhere, any way, in ANY Godfather film.

Ever.

I vote for James Caan's son to play Sonny. You would need to find a place for Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci, and Joe Mantegna. I just can't see DiCaprio having any role in the movie. He just doesn't have the "look". Who would play Luca? You need someone that scares the sh@t out of you just by looking at you.

Oh...sorry, MFM; that question (DiCaprio's an actor?) came from Turi, you just picked up on the subject w/ his films.

Anyway...is Scott Caan an actor? I remember James introducing him at his Actors Studio interview but didn't know he was in 'the business'. Has he appeared in anything?
Don't let's fall into that 'like father like son' trap. Just because he's Jimmy's boy, that doesn't mean he'd do as good a job playing Sonny Corleone. Charlie Sheen might be able to carry it off. Robert Downey Jr. would probably be great as Michael - he's a wonderful actor if only he could get past those 'personal' problems....

Aaaaahhh!!!
You learn something new every day!!
Too bad GFIII was made when Scotty was only 13; a few more years & he probably would've made a better "Vincent" than Andy Garcia!!!
Thanks, MFM...

A better Vincent then Andy Garcia. Highly unlikely. Garcia did the job better than anyone else could have. Better than Johnny Depp, better than Scott Caan and better than anyone else. He was nominated for a Oscar as well.
