Just wanted to say hello, as it's my first time here posting. I've been a fan for about a year now, and this is a very helpful sight. I just wanted to see if there was anyone else who felt that the whole bit about Lucy in the novel was a bit overdone and really was pointless. I didn't see what that added to the story at all.I saw the movies first, and after reading the novel, I thought that it was one of the few examples of the movie being better than the book (although I did enjoy the bits about young vito). Does anyone else feel this way, or am I in the minority?

No people agree with you that the Lucy Mancini and even the Johnny Fontane part was overdone in the novel. I agree with the Lucy Mancini partt, but I enjoyed reading about Johnny's struggle in Hollywood to become a big star again and to become a family man once again.

Yes Lucy had way too big of a part (no pun intended, get your mind out of the gutter)She was talked about a lot in the wedding scene so I could tell there was going to be more of here, but it was really pointless. They should have talked about Fredo in LV, he was an actual part of the family.

Puzo was one of those authors (like Ian Fleming of James Bond fame) who couldn't resist passing along every bit of erudition he'd ever accumulated. Evidently a woman he knew had had that operation, or he knew a doctor who performed the operation, and so he learned about it and got fascinated with it. You've found, as did many of us here, that the sole purpose of all that Lucy-and-Jules crap was so that he could describe her operation. Made me feel used! mad
Puzo also spent plenty of time in Hollywood before publishing GF. The sole purpose of all that boring Johnny-and-Nino crap was so he could show off what he learned about how Hollywood works. mad Objectionable as it is, it's nowhere near as bad as that s***load of Hollywood BS that he piled on--and nearly sank--"The Last Don." One of the reasons that the TV series was better than the novel is that the TV series dispensed with most of the Hollywood BS.

I personally Thougt Nino and Johnny and their story added additional information and leads me to decide that he was a composite of Sinatra.

A Suporting Role In A WWII film that wins them an Oscar...
Coincidence? I THINK NOT!

As For Lucy, I couldnt give three shits about her...

Welcome to the boards Darth smile

I agree with you I hated that part of the novel frown I am so glad they didn't ruin the movie by putting that in.
