Still reading Revenge but I've already found out what happens in the end.
Anyway, it sounds like Winegardner got it backwards. He should have told us the backstory behind Clemenza's death "That wasn't no heart attack" instead of having Geraci drown Hagen, which we were told was a heart attack as is in Part III.
Winegardner had the facts or plot-holes to work within but he chose to ignore them, just another example of Winegardner spitting in the fans' faces.

Fuck him. He'll never be a part of the Godfather enterprise in anyway. He knows that.
The hero and the coward both feel the same thing, but the hero uses his fear, projects it onto his opponent, while the coward runs. It's the same thing, fear, but it's what you do with it that matters. Cus D'Amato

When you break it down, all Winegardner really did was "use" the Godfather story and characters as a basis to introduce and further his creation of the Nick Geraci character.

Five - ten years from now, they're gonna wish there was American Cosa Nostra. Five - ten years from now, they're gonna miss John Gotti.
